Don't Touch Me!

For a grunt
The top three sins
To be committed
In military life:
Don't touch my weapon,
My food or my woman
Without permission -
In that order

But, today, it's
Don't touch my
Latte, my luxury car
Or my hair
Without permission

And, in aikido, it's
Don't touch me!
Unless you mean to
Harmonize, blend, and
Be one with the universe!
Ah, maturity...

Sturgeon's Law

Nothing is always absolutely so
Such is the nature of nothing
Or, is it just the nature of paradox?

Ragnarok of Being

Ragnarok of being
The final battle
For the soul -
Past the gate
And the great doubt
To the center of being
A battle fought alone
Odin and his ilk
Not there to help

Reality creates us
And we create reality
Around and around it goes
Somewhere in the boundaries
Lies freedom, the freedom
To pursue our own Path
A Path that leads us where?
To a being-in-the-world fog?
To the final despair?

Where there is no answer left
But the Abyss, the Void
The place we fear most
But need to enter
To take that great leap
And at the end
At the beginning
Find the message:
Welcome Seeker!

Silence is not nothing

Silence is not trying
To deny or ignore
That which cannot
Be spoken of

Silence is a finger
Pointing, focusing
Mutely giving direction

Sit in the center
Of silence, and...

Arrogant, Armed, and Assholic

Arrogant, armed, and assholic
With a small talent
For mayhem and violence
Not much of a resume
But, unfortunately, they
Can be found everywhere
Strutting, focused on belly and phallus
Foot-soldiers for those
Who see the future
In terms of greed and power
Self-indulgence and authority
Rather than responsibility, self-control,
Understanding, and community

At first the Way of the Sword
Has a surface appeal
Till a bewildered understanding
Takes place or is imposed
For it is not easy for some
To understand or value
That a sword in the sheath is priceless, or
That the cleanest cut is the cut withheld
And to comprehend the Sword of No-Sword, even less so
For those focused only on Something
This is impossible to understand
Or to grasp that only the Sword of No-Sword
Is sharp enough to cut Nothing

The End of Knowing

What lies at the end of knowing?
After pulling back the layers...
The layers and layers
Chasing after this retreating question
Deeper and deeper into the abyss
Within the mind, a vortex
Where even light is darkness
Where there is nothing but nothing
A nothing that absorbs everything
Yet reflects back nothing
What lies there in this place
Where even "me" and "I" have no meaning?
Is there anything at the core?
Or does nothing lie at the end of knowing?
Who knows? But the sky is very blue!

Fog and wind
I have been to
The mountain
Seeking the wisdom
Of the tengu
To overcome my enemies
Preparing myself with
Inner and outer purity
Hoping to prove worthy

Fog and wind
Within I drift
Simplicity and serenity
No attachments
Or distractions
Only then do I
Identify my true enemy --

Nothing Special

The trees stand in the wind
The wind blows through the trees
Nothing special
Yet, poets write poems to the event
Extolling the moment

But neither the trees nor the wind care
Perhaps it is the eyes of Schrodinger's cat
That brings meaning to the moment
Where none exist
Still, the poems are lovely…

Dragon or Snake?

You can fill in the eyes
Of the painted dragon
Or, you can add legs
To the painted snake
One may be necessary
One is not

What, in aikido
Needs to be filled in?
What needs to be eliminated?
Or, is it already complete?
Dragon or snake?
Real choices, or...?

I try to wake up
But I am locked
In the dream
I have no whisk-bearer
To offer wisdom, and
To guide my path
So, many times, humbly,
In gassho
I offer my back
To the kyosaku
Of the world
But I am still not
Nonetheless, I continue
My monkey-mind
Doing its best
My limitations
All too apparent
