Everyone Has a Plan

Everyone has a plan
Till the bullets start flying
Then, taking cover and
Returning fire is sometimes
All that's left
A default Plan B

Back-up is far away
Logistical support
Is, as usual, a distant joke
Still, what doesn't kill you
Makes you stronger, right?
Or, is that a joke, too?

Naturally, there is always retreat
‘Course, the military does not retreat
It does a retrograde redeployment
You don't care what it's called
But getting out of Dodge
Is sometimes the best plan

Peter Principle

The Peter Principle
I watch for it every day
In organizations and people

Even in Aikido
Does it apply in Aikido?
Do people rise to their

Level of incompetence?
Or, because aikidoists, though
Part of a larger organization,

Are seeking personal growth
And development, does this
Exempt them from this principle?

Same rank, different capabilities
Individual, personal growth?
Or, is Peter alive and well?

Stochastic Man

Uke attacks, strongly
I enter and lead - late!
Uke's balance is not taken
No kuzushi for me!
And, I expose myself to uke's
I try applying brute force
Argh...! I feel I might as well
Use some random defense
Some Brownian motion
That can't be predicted

But this is kata
Attack and defense in form
No takemusu yet, if ever!
One day, perhaps
My attack and defense
Will be one chance in a lifetime -
Ichi-go ichi-e, unique
And self-generating
I will be a stochastic man
Unpredictable within
The Aikido universe!

Bruised Hands

Bruised hands
Scared and gnarled
Battered by life
They help build or destroy
They carry the
Weight of weapons
When needed

They carry a babe -
Ever so gently...
They carry my heart
They carry my soul
They carry life and death
Such are my hands
My bruised hands
