Thank You for Your Service

Thank you for your service
I usually get some of this
Every Memorial Day
And Veterans Day
It makes me feel uncomfortable
My service was so long ago
And nothing to match
The most current crop of veterans
And it makes me annoyed
That veterans only get
Recognized on two days a year
Two days a year! -
If even then

Some people may be sincere
At other times it feels
Like lip-service from those
Who feel they must say something
Two days a year
I didn't serve for empty, PC thanks
Though it is good that
Service is recognized, somehow

But, throughout America
Veterans are embedded within
Their families and communities
Struggling with life
And memories and a society
That doesn't have time
Or understand or care
Trying to make it work
Trying to fit back in
Though sometimes the
Hardest thing a veteran
Can do is try to sleep
Through the night!

So, a Thank you for your service
Can sometimes seem empty
Two days a year

Some of you may have noticed that the past few postings have been about war and battle and such, leading up to today's posting of Thank You for Your Service. I hope that you will take some time, this Memorial Day weekend, to remember the original purpose behind this time and give a nod, however briefly, to our men and women in our military services and to all our veterans out there.

The legs come off
The legs go on
Wonderful prosthetics
Modern day marvels
Keeping me out of a wheelchair
Allowing me to do
Amazing things
Like walk and run

Still, when the real legs
First came off
Amid explosions and blood
And much, much shock and pain
(Blessedly, memory ends there)
It was less than pleasant!

Though leaving two legs
Behind on the battlefield
Really, really sucks!
I am proud to have served
But, but, let's make
Each war worth it!
So that as much as possible
Body-bags are left empty
And limbs remain attached

The point of the spear
Needs to trust
The leaders at home
That putting the spear
In harm's way
Is important, has a meaning
For people and country
Not just for ego, money, or
Corporate expansion

Should our APCs have a
Corporate logo on them?
ForceForward™, get there safely!

Should our C-130s flash
A big happy-meal sign
As they roar down the runway?

Should our drones broadcast:

Before they fire?
Please bring some shrapnel back
for a free coupon!

Bang! You're dead!

So, make sure it is
All worth it and done
For the right reasons
For even with my
Wonderful prosthetics
My stumps cry out
In phantom-limb pain

The spirits of my lost limbs
Weep and are tormented
Haunted by their loss
For vanished sensation and life
And, my fe ...More Read More

What is war about?
Gallantry or glory? -- Neither
War is about winning!
You die! They die!
Principles aside
On many battlefields
Who dies the most and last
Determines the winner

But, everyone -- on both sides --
Just wants to get home
However, unless somehow we can
Change warfare and people
Many won't
So, on many battlefields
Only tall, rich grasses
Survive and thrive

  #110 New 05-04-2014 04:13 PM

My fear was so powerful
It was afraid of itself
Fear is the mind killer -
But only if allowed to take root
Sitting in seiza, breathing deeply
Doing four-count breathing
Letting the fear wash all over me

And pass on through me
Slowly the fear diminished
Disappearing, with everything else
Till I sat calm, still, ready...
The call when it came -- hajime!
Found me centered and prepared
Mind clear, I faced my opponents
