I guess this is a spinoff from my previous blog entry, athough I haven't re read it very recently. Today I'm thinking again about seeing what's available in the present moment. Here are a few thoughts:

Time: my late brother in law, who did different kinds of trades related work, in this case specifically painting. He said if you have half an hour, paint for half an hour.


This goes so well for household projects. If you can only vacuum a portion of a room, vacuum a portion of a room (especially if you have to move stuff out of the way to do it, like stacks of stuff in an office) (remember to "listen to your body")

So that's what I did this morning. A portion. That's a bit less dust in the room, I'd say. And I will, to "Hubby Dear" when he returns from driving!

I guess the Aikido readers might smile and agree it's better to start something than to wait for the other guy to ask (or complain....) I think they call it Irimi in Daily Life

For the Aikidoka, this could apply to training. Figure out what you can do with the partners you have available, whatever their strengths or weaknesses are. Learn from them, hope they can learn from you. I was just on a thread where the poster asked a question along those lines, or rather the comments developed that way.

And Mary of "Spring Thoughts" fame on the thread, has written a form of reminder to notice the weather. Well, it promises to be really hot today, so I'm glad I did something physical already to warm up, so later I can get something done at a more careful or leisurely pace.

To return to the title of Availability, I am happy to cite Francis Takahashi's (a.k.a. Aikishihan's) column this month on Hitori Geiko.
For me this has a special meaning that is reassuring , validating, and liberating. To think I have been doing Aikido all along even when I was regretting not training.

And my friends have too. One of them has a back injury, but has been taking long walks in the Swampscott - Marblehead area (near Boston) for years. Those with injuries can find different ways to do Hitori Geiko, solo training according to Francis. While we still had snow on the ground, I think it was, I enjoyed the video of walks in the mountains of Gran Canaria that Carina posted

The other forms of training that Francis mentioned are also important to consider. You are training while teaching, even simply helping another student. You can train with one other person.... it's Futari Geiko .... and I'd better get some things started in a low key manner to progress the cleaning, organizing, and outdoor clipping... So Hubby Dear will make time in his driving and construction schedule to do a little Aikido practice with me. Nikyo is especially nice to counteract that sluggish feeling in the joints some of us get in the hot weather.... Enjoy your day, whatever is available to you in it

(I think I just learned smilies...) PS for years I have been watching seminars from time to time at the local dojo depending on time and transportation... and glad to find from Francis' column that watching is also Keiko!

The exercise is an invent of my teacher . This morning I felt so bad , I didn't feel like that in many year, I almost asked to go home, but I managed till 1:30 PM lunch time, I ate a soup and felt better, but I really feel better now after the Aikido class, a real medicine, better than a doctor Today we had tanto defence and a little test for the hakamas.

Thank you very, very much Carina. Even with dial up I was able to see enough of the exercise to say, yes, it does look like waves and a good way to connect the class each person to the others smoothly and a fun way to practice both suwari waza and rolling. My husband needed the computer, but later today I can view the whole thing even though the computer is really slow. Definitely like this video (five stars, maybe six....or twelve thumbs up

Hi Diana, I only have tuesdays and thurdays aikido classes, so we must wait until tuesday, but maybe I can add that when you have uke on the floor, leave the hand that grips the arm on the gi and roll puting your back on his and your other arm on the other side and then up again suwariwaza to face the next uke. It is really difficult to explain but so easy to do

Wow thanks again, Francis. I find the older I get the more I have to try to grasp the feeling of Aiki, with all the challenges that daily life brings. I guess this too is keiko, dealing with challenges... .(Carina's got me going with the smilies....)

Hi Carina, thanks, I'm still trying to figure out how uke rolls back after ikkyo, but maybe it's just the irimi entry without the hold down at the wrist and shoulder .... I'd love to try to view a video, they sometimes come in stops and starts on this phone line hookup, but then replay normal speed if we're lucky

Hi Diana, I'm sure that must be beautiful,maybe you could put a photo? I was thinking that I did not explain myself very good in the comparison. The exercise was not an ukemi, but rolling in parallel on ukes back, just like the rolling waves. Maybe if we do it again I can make a short video so it will be easier to understand. And very nice your learning to use the smilies

I meant our local beach, of course, but yours is great to dream about. I read some of the forum members from the UK, lucky ones, may get to visit there There is a gorge up in the hills around here, with hemlocks, old stone walls, an old granite quarry, and the river trail descends to a reservoir.... I'll have to revisit this natural wonder soon....

(cont)the same with the next one and so on, afterwards the row who was first ready with the same space between everybody was the winner. So in my walk I wondered if the wind was the uke of the waves and the dunes or they were just doing Hitori Geiko? Here the photo of that walk.

Thank you Diana for your thoughtful post. Yes we walk in the mountain from october to april, but now it is too hot for that, so I walk by myself on the shore of the beach. In my last walk I was thinking about a nice exercise we did in our aikido class and with what we had a lot of fun : two rows, in each half of the class, aprox 1 meter each one from the other in suwariwaza, the first one was attacked in shomen and tori did a direct ikkyo to the floor and an ukemi on ukes back,
