In General blasphemous thoughts Entry Tools Rate This Entry

i was thinking of starting out this post by stating my admiration of and loyalty to aikido... but i think it is unnecessary. my actions, past, present and future, will be sufficient.

perhaps every so often, the traveler on a path questions the path they tread.

as i have had posted a few weeks ago, i have begun cross-training in Systema, and so far i have enjoyed the sessions quite a bit.

one thing i have considered prior to starting - or indeed, has led me to begin - was the possibility that Systema is more of what O-Sensei was intending Aikido to look like, than the Aikido that we practice today.

amongst O-Sensei's [paraphrased] quotes that gets bandied every so often are that 'Aikido has no set techniques', and that 'every time you do a technique, it is different'. Another popular one is that 'Aikido is 70-90% (the percentage varies depending to source) atemi'. if i simply use the two training methodologies as the bases for comparison, then i would argue that Systema is more consistent with my understanding of O-Sensei's vision for Aikido - or at least the physical aspects of it.

is it possible that Aikido as we know it today has veered far away from what O-Sensei intended? i am not the first to ask this question, and i'm certainly not the last.

until i find an answer, if ever, i shall just have to continue my shugyo. onegai shimasu.

I think the problem is that we try to look for genuineness in technique, as if technique were the end instead of a means. Certainly in that way we have veered away from what O'Sensei intended, by solely trying to imitate his techinique, instead of following his example and using technique to develop our own aikido.

O'sensei left us Aikido, a set of forms (kihon waza) and philosophy as a means to cultivate the spirit of budo. One should not confuse technique and set forms with the free-form aplications. Once technique is mature and principles understood, one can act with spontaneity (see tzu jan). If one uses more or less atemi only depends on ones inclinations, different people do different aikido.

Months after it was written, I found this entry and am commenting. I took up Shotokan on the recommendation of a neighbor, and found it helped my balance (I was getting on in years) also my Aikido teacher's friend was emphasizing atemi so I had a chance to learn more about that, too. Your blog is interesting, I'll read more of the entries

"is it possible that Aikido as we know it today has veered far away from what O-Sensei intended?" I think it depends on what period in the life of O'Sensei we are talking about, if we are talking about the first years it was much more for fighting(only for the body) and in his last years he completed the circle of aikido with mind and body, he left us the spiritual way of aikido(see most of the treads in this forum)
