Even As They Ask

Even as they ask, they teach
I paused, the kyu rank's question
Momentarily halting the flow
The explanation required thought
And as I thought, I learned
I bowed in gratitude

Even His Equal

My teacher said
That he was teaching me
To be better than he was
That it was his duty
To progress the art this way
Not all feel this way
Some hold back
So I hated to disappoint him
But my art could never
Never be even his equal
Never mind superior

Bonsai Soul

My bonsai soul
Pruned, sculptured,
Shaped by life
And deep soul-winds
Sometimes brutally
Sometimes gently
A continuing process

Sometimes, sometimes
I lend a hand
When I can
But, mostly, mostly, I am
Only an observer
Watching my bonsai soul
Take shape

My Calligraphy

My calligraphy is poor
It shows hesitation, indecision
It lacks poise, precision,
It lacks boldness, flow, clarity
Hell, it just lacks!
But, I sit, I breathe
I take up brush and ink
And delve once more
Into my deficiencies

Writing Poetry

When you write poetry
Everything talks to you
The wind, the trees, flowers,
Traffic on city streets
The moon takes on a new life
Especially internally
Even ordinary existence
Is full of non-ordinariness
A stone by the side of the road
Tells me many stories
The true nature of things
Is partly revealed...But...
The common world
Still confuses me
Meaning still eludes me
But, even this, I write about

He walked into the dojo
Confident, arrogant even
He said he had black belts
In a number of martial arts
And, now, wanted one in aikido
How long will it take? He asked
I got one in taekwondo in a year
And, I really like that samurice stuff
(Really! Samurice??)
Sensei's reply was nicer
Than mine would have been
But, we did suwari waza
For the entire class that night
We never saw him again

Black Belt

As a black belt
I should know things
But, something is missing

As part of a three-some
I stand to the side
Waiting my turn
Watching other aikidoka
On the mat
I watch the ebb and flow
The atemi, the ukemi
The grace, the lack, thereof
I see kyu ranks struggling
Using brute force, and
Too much muscle
Too many muscles
To perform techniques
And, scratch their heads
As some black belts
Moving with speed and precision
Utilize trained strength instead
And do the techniques effortlessly
Still, something seems off
And I don't know what
When my turn comes
I jump right in, but still thinking

As a black belt
I should know things
But, something is missing

There Is This

There is this
Concentrate on this
Don't add
Don't subtract
The not-self is not there
Yet is
Sunyata thus tathata
Emptiness thus suchness
Beyond the zafu
Beyond words
Look at the world
With eyes
That have no meaning

Even the sun, the full moon
Are eventually overcome by death
Why should my fate be different?

Only the Frogs Cried

As saintly as he was
He ate, he shat, he bled,
He pissed in the night
Young women brought him
Delight and trouble...
Mosquitoes whined in glee
When he sat under a full moon
Frozen icicles hung from him
In the winter
Sweat steamed from him
In the summer
Still, he harmed no one
And brought joy and comfort to some
In the shadow and shade
Of the ginkgo tree's
Whispering leaves - he died
Only the frogs cried
