Footsteps Disappearing

Through my open window
The moon's light limitless
I inhabit my absence
My heart-mind at peace
My true nature comes forth
I think of walking on falling snow
Footsteps disappearing
With each step

At the Water-Hole

Late at night
At the water-hole
Animals think nothing
Of drinking in the moon
In the water
If I joined them
What would happen?

Quiet Mystery

Candlelight crowds the night
In quiet mystery
Thought and silence
Merge together
In primal unity
Who else knows of this?

Blue Cliff Record

Reading The Blue Cliff Record
Sometimes I get a glimmer
Just a faint glimmer
Of understanding
Then it disappears
But, then, I've been reading
It for years, years
And still not finished
Perhaps there is still time

I was recently at a weekend seminar at Kyoseikan Dojo, in Grand Rapids, MI. The training and practice were just great, plus we had shodan, sandan, and yondan testing, which was fascinating to watch. Thankfully, everyone passed. We also had promotions presented and Lizzy Lynn, Shihan, flew in from California to share her deep wisdom. A very good weekend. I was also asked to write a poem commemorating this event. This is my attempt to give a great seminar its due. Hopefully, I got some of it right:

Living Collaboratively

I want to touch
The rings of Saturn
I want to float
Through interstellar stardust
Another more practical option
Was a recent weekend
Celebrating ten years
Of living collaboratively
With teachers, students,
And community - Aikidoka
Training with heart and intent
Successfully testing to limits
Nages and ukes leaving
Little on the mat
A large cricket attacking guests
With doleful looks and demands
For lots of belly-rubs
An anniversary, birthday, testing
Promotions, grand weather
All great reasons to share
A mutual gathering of like minds
Two wooden posts - a hard reminder
That ten-directional eyes
Is more than just a weird saying!
A visiting west coast master
Such were all the ingredients
For another great seminar
At Kyoseikan Dojo
Where tradition meets community

Binder of Demons

As I practice
Out of the corner of my eye
I catch your statue
Fudo Myo-o
Binder of demons
Tucked neatly, reverently
In the kamiza
Following my every move

Burn off my anger
Purify my mind
Let Kurikara cut
Cleanly through my ignorance
Let my spirit be immovable
All my demons -
My limitations and my needs
I think all these thoughts
As I practice and train

I cycle through partner after partner
I throw or pin
Then, it is done to me
Again and again
Years go by, decades
Always, I watch fierce
Fudo Myo-o
Binder of demons
Hoping for a little compassion

Flawless Pond

Slowly following the stream of his words
I entered the pond of his understanding
Clear, deep, immersing myself
Hoping they would lead me
Lead me to fathom his meaning
But to know true meaning
To have my own understanding
I have to create my own flawless pond

The Smell of Shit

The smell and taste of shit
Is obvious and overwhelming
Yet, all some can see
Is the jeweled receptacle
It comes in

Simple Practice

Simple practice
I show up and sweat
Partner after partner
Technique after technique
We all go through the motions
Nage, uke, uke, nage...
Time after time
Simple practice
Perhaps that is the problem
Simple practice

Screamed at me

While my own voice
Turned a feeble white in death
