Courage.

Develop the ability to control your movements when executing a technique.

It is very obvious when you are allowing fear to control your movements.

Consider it deeply and thoroughly, because thinking you are doing something and doing something different is very common.

Check out my student. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c0wjWE74c38 Posture and position, using both feet to move off line. He trusts his evasion skills. Now he can learn to wait for my mistakes (loss of attention, a flinch when he strikes my arm, or over committment because I cannot hit him). He uses Philipino angling and zoning skills that took him 3 weeks to master.

I taught my kids class like this: How do you win a fight? Do not get hit! Keep posture and use your both feet to move. Learn how to evade @ 1" away first with a padded stick. Progress to a hard stick. Sticks move faster than hands. Progress to a dull shiny sword. Flash can hypnotize you; steal your attention from your task. Progress to a sharp sword. Finally progress to a riding crop. Sound may be the only thing you can judge distance by on a wet dark night. Crops move too fast to see.

Basic fears: fear of death & living as a cripple. Take some hits. Your body is resilient. I doubt uke will present a knife and cut your achilles tendon if your techniaue fails. You cannot lie to your subconscious. You cannot say, "I am not afraid". What you can say is that I notice fear approaching. I acknowledge it. I will continue my path and smile as it passes me by. Let's all be serious people who do not take ourselves seriously. Laughing trumps fear. Chris Parkerson

scarey Says:
a problem i often run into is that fear is contagious. if i fear entering to do the technique, nage will fear attacking sincerely. it works the other way around too sometimes.
