Breakfalls on Tuesday

10/12/04 : )

Since my mom is up in Maine visiting my older sister, my dad dropped me off at the dojo, Tuesday night. Sensei Mark was there and I was very relieved and happy to see him okay and pnemonia free! :) Larry was the only other person to show up for class! I wonder where everybody was! I found out that Larry went to his first Saturday morning class (usually he has to work). Good for him! That was only the 2nd time that he's actually seen Mr. Larry (head sensei) in the 2 years or so that he's been coming here! It would be great if he was able to make more Saturday classes.

Anyway, Mark started the class and we had some turning practice which went into Irimi techniques (like the "scarf" one). Then he asked what we wanted to do so I said that it's been a long time since I've been able to practice some breakfalls (Larry said that was fine with him). So most of the rest of the class we started off with techniques with uke having the options of either slow rolls or low breakfalls, and we built up from there ending with higher breakfalls. We never did the actual Koshi technique. Anyway, I was proud of myself because I did a lot of breakfalls (Larry did too) and only twice I landed kind of sideways or hurt my hand a little bit once. I'm getting better and it's neat how it doesn't hurt (most of the time)! :)

Couldn't make it to class Thursday or this (Saturday) morning. My parents and I have an appointment to get our pictures taken for our church directory this Tuesday evening so I'm missing that class too! My mom and I should be able to make this Thursday's class but I'll be missing this next Saturday's because I have to take the ACT test since I've never taken it before and I'm in college now! AAAHHHHH!!! :yuck:  I'm missing too many classes! :hypno: I'm going to go through withdrawl! :dead:

Where did this come from???

9/21/04---Tuesday's class---Us, Larry, and Henry. We were very happy when Henry showed up as he taught the class. We did a lot of tenkan practice in our techniques. All 3 of us needed that practice.

9/23/04---Thursday's class---Us, Jim, Mark, Larry, and Henry. :) Peter's out of town right now but it felt like a more normal class because more people were there. Poor Mark's got pnemonia (!) so he said he was going to take it easy teaching but he was still in a really good mood. It was a really fun class but Mark had us do some weird stuff! At the very beginning, he had us all lie down on our backs and do 6 inch drills! I only knew what they were because of seeing my Tang Soo Do friend do them. I don't know why but it was killing my back! Next we did another exersise of just holding ourselves up on our hands and toes. I was supposed to feel that in my abs but all I felt was my back killing me! :dead: I was very relieved when we stopped doing that. I thought I'd be really sore today but I'm not. If I'm motivated, I should start trying to practice doing those exercises at home so I can strengthen those muscels.

For techniques we did Irimis and Shiho Nages from Katatori Menuchi. It was funny because near the end of class, Sensei Mark got on my mom, me, and Jim for doing Shiho Nage in a weird/unnessasary painful looking way. The way we were doing it is the way that Mr. Larry (the senior sensei) has been showing us every Saturday for over a month now but Mark hasn't been there. Jim had to explain it to Mark and do it on him so he could see that it's not as painful as it looks and that it actually keeps the balance better. Funny! :D

At the end of class, I got to be partnered with Mark for Kokyu-dosa (sitting kokyus). I surprised him because I actually had good extension and balance most of the time and I was actually able to get him down! That's what happens when he goes out of town and gets sick, I suppose. Half of his students finally get what he's been trying to tell us all these years! Anyway, he complemented me on having good extension after class. That made me feel good. :) He also noticed that I was driving home tonight and had to get out of his truck, come running over, and tease me about letting him pull out of the parking lot first so I wouldn't hit him. That didn't bother me at all and again, I was quite pleased that he even noticed I was going to drive home. We're friends but since he's a man after all, he doesn't notice half the things one of my female friends might.

Evacuated from the Hurricane but we're back now...

...My family and everyone else in my city/state was very lucky that Hurricane Ivan turned at the last minute otherwise we would have been in big trouble! Some people here did have problems actually but that's nothing compared to what other people got. All that happened to us was a tree blew down in our backyard. Seeing pictures in the newspapers and on TV, it's very sad about the great destruction that Ivan did cause in the cities it plowed through. :( I hope all Aikidokas on this board who live in those places are safe and I hope all the people who suffered damage will get back on their feet as quickly as possible. My thoughts and prayers are with them.

I'm behind in my journal entries! I was going to catch up but then we left because of Ivan. I've gone a whole week without Aikido and I'm going through withdrawl! My mom and I did try to practice some Aikido when we were in the motel pool. It was difficult but very funny as we could hardly do anything to uke without dunking them underwater. :p We actually evacuated to San Antonio and I looked in the phone book for Aikido dojos and I was excited to find 3 definite places! Unfortunatly, we weren't able to visit any and we didn't have our gi's with us besides. :(

It was September 7th, 2 weeks ago where I'm starting off my catching up. Amy called me to say that she couldn't come to class because she had too much college work to do. I was sad she couldn't come but because there wasn't a single beginner in the class (first time in quite awhile), Mark took the opportunity to have a fast paced class doing Randori (multiple attackers/random techniques) in groups of 2 and 3. (Us, Mark, Larry, Peter, & Henry were there that night.) The technique level we were (trying) to do was 1st kyu and Shodan. Sometimes I did okay but other times my mind would go totally blank and I'd end up trying to do the same technique over and over again. I was Mark's uke for the whole class and I got pretty exhausted as I didn't get a chance to rest and the air conditioner wasn't cooling very well so we were very hot and dripping sweat everywhere! For about the 5th class in a row---I tried to tie my hakama and belt as tightly as I could but it was STILL starting to slip down a bit 5 minutes into class! I'm doing something wrong! Half way through the class, I finally pulled off my hakama and set it on a chair because it was starting to put me in danger of tripping. It was a good class and an exhausting workout. It also made me realize how long it had been since we've been able to have a class like this. I definitly don't mind the beginners classes though!

Thursday (Sept. 9th), I was proud of myself because that afternoon, I got a call from a guy asking for information about our dojo. My mom and I are officially the dojo contacts through e-mail and phone but that was the very first time I got to live up to telling somebody the correct information over the phone. :D I was also proud of myself because I drove across the river from home to the dojo for the very first time! It was quite stressful though. :hypno:

Amy couldn't make it again and Mark wasn't there so Peter taught. The visitor just came to watch our class but we're not sure what he thought of it. Besides us and Peter, Jim, and Larry were there. I was Peter's uke for half of the class. (My hakama didn't fall down this time!) We did a lot of Kotegieshi but with practicing different falls. We finally got up to a Koshi Nage and ukes could either roll out of that or do a high breakfall. I did (or tried to do) several breakfalls and my right side was a little sore the next day. Because of all the fall practice, I thought it might have been a strange class for the 1 class a beginner might come to watch. Oh well.

That's all the updates I can think of. Can't wait until class tonight!

I actually felt comfortable enough to...

...lead the 8 directional kata with the bokkens! (Tuesday's class--8-25-04)

(I didn't add anything to my journal last week even though I went to class and I started college for the first time on Monday (!!!!!) so I better add this in now before I forget. Oh yeah, we cut down and sanded and waxed our new jo's last week! They're perfect now!)

Last week, before class, Amy (she got her gi last week!) wanted me to help her with the 8 directional bokken cut. I did and even though I've known how to do it for a long time, I've never shown anyone how to do it before. But because I did that with Amy last week, when Mark asked me to please lead bokkens (so he could walk around and correct people), I actually felt confident enough to try the 8 d. cut up there! When I lead the bokkens, it's few and far between so I'm often nervous and every time I consider attempting the 8 directional, I just know that my mind might go blank so I never tried. I led everyone with shomenuchi stationary strike first, then all the turns, then with a tenkan, and the 8 d. cut (left foot forward) we went through twice. I considered trying the other side where it would be totally opposite but I figured I better not push my luck. ;) Everyone said I did a really good job up there! :D Mark caught my eye and smiled and bowed---I think he was pleased and proud of me for being more comfortable up there and finally trying the 8 d. cut. Hurray! :D:D:D

I think another reason why I felt comfortable up there leading (for the first time EVER) was because Peter and the higher up guys weren't there. Usually, as soon as I call the numbers, the higher up guys are already finished the turns before I'm half way around even though they are supposed to be following me since I was asked to go up and lead. That's okay, I suppose, but a bit nerve-racking as they're setting the pace faster than I wanted to go. But I didn't feel at all intimidated by my mom, Amy, Larry, or Sensei Mark, last night.

A new guy (older gentleman), who has only done some Tai Chi came to watch our class. We doubt he'd be interested in joining as he's older and probably doesn't know how to roll and it would be difficult.

Technique-wise---Kosidori (sp?) Kokkyu, Kosidori Irimi Nage & Koteigieshi (sp?), and a weird pin/move/thing that I've seen Mark do before but we've only been shown maybe once how to do it. I couldn't get it quite right and the overall feeling of the class was "I don't know ANYTHING!" I wasn't discouraged though because I felt so good about the bokkens and I know I can't get everything right.

Back from vacation

Wow! I actually got a comment on my journal! People actually do read it!!! (Or at least skim through to see if there is anything vaguely interesting.) :D
Hi Robyn

I just wanted to mention to you what I did for a jo. I just went to the local lumber store and bought a peice of oak dowling and cut it to the proper length. I didn't need to finish it. It already had a nice smooth surface and slid well in the hands. I think I paid less than 10.00 for it. That was 2 years ago and it's still my jo.
That's a really good idea, Kelly! If I hadn't already bought the bo's then I bet we might have tried that. :) Bo's haven't come in the mail yet but soon, I expect. :)

I had sooooooooo missed Aikido while I was on vacation (came back Tuesday night) that I couldn't wait for Thursday's class! When it came though, I was soooo tired that I felt almost too tired to participate. I did participate in the class (of course) and soon I was wide awake and really enjoying myself!

Besides us and Amy, Mark, Jim, Peter, Larry, and Wayne were there and we had a good time. We did Yokemenuchi Shiho Nage and Yokomen with a technique that was a lot like an Ude but both of our hands were on uke's wrist (as if doing Shiho) so it was like the back Ude only the hands were like that. Don't know if I'd ever done that technique/variation before and it had a name that I didn't recognize it and don't remember now.

Saturday's class (8-7-04)--- I must still on California time a little bit because it's been taking me a long time to get to sleep every night but instead of being able to sleep in, I keep waking up really early and not able to go back to sleep. Friday night was no exception but I didn't feel too tired at first. I was very surprised that Mark came! He hasn't been able to make it most Saturdays. Peter, Jim, & Mr. Larry were also there. Mr. Larry said that he finished teaching the secrets of Aikido the two weeks we were gone (LOL!) and he didn't have a real plan of what to do today so after the opening bokkens and kokkyus, we started off with Shomenuchi Ikkyo ura then omote and moved onto Yokomenuchi Irimi Nage (20 year version). My current problem with Irimi Nage is that I don't move in deep enough and I have trouble getting uke's balance. This time, I had trouble because I kept moving in TOO deep and had a hard time doing the technique and being too far away. I was glad when we moved on to Kotegieshi (sp?) and Kokkyus. Enjoyable class. I got frustrated a few times and I was glad when class was over simply because I was tired and running out of energy (needed to eat something). However, I was very glad I was there. ;)

Found Jo's--sort of

I'm still on vacation in California. I've been having a wonderful time! :D From looking in the phone books there are at least 3 Aikido dojo's around here but I didn't bring my gi and things have been too busy to go visit anyway. I even rode past one on the way to the beach (not sure which one it was though) but to unexpectingly see one was exciting for me! I really miss Aikido and my people at my dojo a lot and I keep thinking about the techniques, etc. "Hi and welcome to Aikido Anonomous (sp?). My name is Robyn and I'm obsessed with...."

I did call around to several supply stores and I found a place relatively close that said they had jo's. My uncle drove me there (my mom was off with her sisters on a mini trip) and I was very glad to see the merchandise in person. The only jo that they had was very strange as it was tapered (sp?) and very skinny at the ends. Nobody in my dojo has a jo like that! I ended up getting 2 short (maybe 5 feet???) bo's (one for me and one for my mom) and they are the correct width. If they are too long, my dad has all the wood cutting stuff in the garage so it will be very easy to cut it down. I think it was a success. :) It's going to be shipped to our house so it might arrive by Friday and we're going home on Tuesday.

My vacation has been very nice but the only thing that I'm looking forward to when I get home is Aikido! By then I hope my terrible sunburn will be gone. Didn't get sunburned at all on my face but I got it bad on my back and bits on my shoulders. Wouldn't dream of doing a forward/back roll right now. Too painful! :(

Last class before vacation

Last night's class (Tuesday--July 20th) was enjoyable. However I was having stomach problems and had several moments where I wanted to risk embarrassment by ripping off my hakama and running to the upstairs bathroom. (I know I can't be the only Aikidoka who has had that problem!) I lasted okay though (but barely).

Us, Amy, Mark, Peter, and Larry were there. We did the 13 steps with the Jo and then we paired up and did some practical Jo "fighting"---never did that before! Like being partnered up with somebody using the bokkens only we used steps in the Jo kata. Neat!

Technique-wise, we did an entering/blocking beginning (hard to describe---step in with uke striking tsuki and push/block their punch and enter in with other hand) and different variations of Irimi Nage. At the end we formed a line and took turns doing the 3 Irimis. Lastly, we took turns doing Randori each with 3 attackers. I did "okay". Got stuck once maybe. Even Amy got to do that and she was nervous but that's fine since she's a beginner.

Got to get back to packing! Leaving really early tomorrow morning! Too early in fact! >yawn<

4 year Aikido anniversary & Saturday's class

Last Thursday (July 15th) was our 4 year anniversary of our first Aikido class! I'm so glad that we've survived this long and we have sure learned and grown a lot (thinking back of our first years of classes).

Class that night was us, Amy, Jim, Sensei Mark, Larry, and Stark! Jim was teaching Amy Tae Kwon Do kicks and this guy came in and he looked vaguely familier. When he said his name was Stark, I remembered him instantly! He came for a couple of classes in April last year and I remember doing Irimi Nage with him (20 year version) and he picked things up quickly! Glad to see him back trying it again! :)

It was a fun class. I and Larry were Mark's uke's all night. We did Sankyo techniques and I was in that strange mood where I couldn't help giggling everytime I felt the Sankyo torque!

Saturday's class---Us, Amy, Jim, and Mr. Larry. We did Kotegaeshi and Shiho Nage. It was wonderful practice! However, it was really hot and I was dripping wet and I ended up being Mr. Larry's uke for almost the entire class!!! I was getting nausiated from being too hot and too tired and almost went to go sit out for a bit but I'd get a slight wind back and I just made it to the end of the class by the skin of my teeth. (I felt please to have lasted especially since I was actually honored to be uke for so long!) Mr. Larry corrected my Kotegaeshi hold several times and I was with Amy for the Shiho Nage! That was great because Mr. Larry was able to help me figure out how to keep the "bokken grip" on her wrist/arm the whole way through so she couldn't turn out. I kept messing up and I ended with being able to keep the torque on my left side (her right arm) pretty well but I would almost consistantly mess up on the other side. That's okay though. I'll get there. ;)

Coffee after class was fun and we all stayed there talking for a long time. We told Mr. Larry that we're going to California for 13 days and we'll miss 2 of his Saturday classes. He said that that's too bad because he's going to teach all the "secrets" of Aikido and we're going to miss it! Ack! Anyway, this Tuesday is our last class for awhile as we're leaving on Thursday. Even though we're going to be super busy and having a blast on our trip, I'm going to be missing it and thinking of those guys when they're in class!

Ah! It was a great, fun, encouraging class last night! (Tuesday 7/13/04)

My mom, me, & Amy arrived early but Mark did too. Larry and Peter also came. :) I announced to Mark that this Thursday would be the 4 year anniversary of when we started Aikido. Hurray for us for surviving this long! While my mom helped Amy with the rolls and practiced techniques with her, Mark "played" with me and I did terrible (maybe worse than usual). He'd strike Yokomen and I kept stepping to the side and OUT instead of to the side and IN. That made a huge difference as I'd be too far away and he'd get a 2nd (and 3rd, 4th, 5th, etc.) strike in before I could do anything!

After the bokkens and Peter helped Amy do backrolls on one side of the mat while the rest of us formed a line and did Kokyus, we did Tenshi Nage for the rest of the class (with variations). I was Sensei Mark's uke the whole time. :D

Poor Amy got discouraged because Larry (not Mr. Larry who teaches on Saturdays but the other Larry) was making it difficult for her to do the techniques correctly and he was expecting too much from a beginner too. :(

But my mom and I felt very encouraged because we remember learning Tenshi Nage from the 1, 2, 3 steps and how much we've progressed. We still mess things up all the time but we've come a LONG way!!! It took me 2 months just to be able to do a "somersault" when we started and longer than that to be able to do a real forward roll! Amy is doing great on her rolls and she's catching on to the turns, etc. 10 times faster than we did!

I've also matured a lot through my Aikido journey so far and have grown a lot! I remember how for SOOOO long, I used to hate and dispise Irimi Nage (20 year version) with GREAT passion because it was SO hard and I just couldn't break through the mental wall and figure it out! After several years and with everyone's help (especially Sensei Mark's patience) I finally started to understand it and even though I still can't get the technique to work most of the time, I don't hate it anymore.

And the really big way I've grown in just since this past January is the breakfalls!!! I had such a big fear of getting hurt on a breakfall that every time it came up or I saw the other guys do one (and I thought that I might have to), my whole body would start to shake, I'd feel sick, feel like crying, etc. because the fear was so bad! Getting over that fear (which was only from the result of prayer) was like a huge rock being lifted off of my shoulders! Last night, before class, Mark slowly put me into a Koshi (at least 6 times) and I did some lousy breakfalls and he helped me figure out why I'm not landing correctly sometimes. I didn't feel a flicker of that old fear and that's another big reason why I feel encouraged from how far I've come!

I also remember watching Mark and whoever uke demonstrate techniques and the other guys in the line often laugh or smile and I couldn't figure out why! Now I know! The more Aikido classes I come to, the more awesome I realize that Aikido is (grammar?). It blows my mind when Mark or Mr. Larry while simply turn there palm up or down and they can totally take my balance! I started giggling like a fool when Mark was using me as his uke last night. IT LOOKS SO EASY but it's SO complicated! Like walking while chewing gum, while patting your head, while rubbing your stomach, while doing a Irish jig at the same time! It's downright fascinating! :)

The longer I'm in Aikido, the more I realize that I don't know and how awesome it is. My Aiki--journey so far has been a real adventure and I look forward to the years to come!

Hurray for Saturday!!!

Saturday turned out to be a lot of fun! 7/10/04 Whether Saturday's class was really for intermediate/"advance invited" or not has been the question up in the air for a long time! Last week, I finally just came right out and asked Mr. Larry and he said that it's okay with him if beginners want to come! (Maybe people just didn't want us to come on Saturday's when we started almost 4 years ago because they might have been working on Dan level/preparing the guys for teaching then.) Anyway, I told Amy that if she wanted to come then she could. She did come but she planned to only watch but that didn't work out as Peter and Jim talked her onto the mat and Jim even went over and took her shoes off for her. :) (So I guess beginners are really welcome onto the mat on Saturdays!) Wayne was there too.

Since Mr. Larry had finished all the weapons classes, he has started with back with basics (5th kyu). It was a really fun class even though it was very hot! I was Mr. Larry's uke part of the time (and Peter was his other uke) and we did Ikkyo omote & ura and Irimi Nage (20 year version). Mr. Larry would come tell/help me sometimes whether I was with a beginner or someone like Peter or Jim and gave me great tips to polish my techniques. Thanks! :D

After class (since he took them off, Jim had to put Amy's shoes back on her--funny!), we went to coffee as usual and that was fun. I was very happy to have such an enjoyable class and that Amy came and felt welcome.

We only have 4 more classes until my mom and I leave for our California trip (July 22nd)!!! We really are looking forward to it and we need this vacation but we're going to be sad to be missing 6 Aikido classes!!!!!!!!! ACK!!! It's almost unthinkable! We've never missed 6 classes in a row for anything before! What are they going to do without us? :(

I had a few interesting experiances last night! Due to our van having problems and that my mom would have to leave half way through class anyway for Praise Team practice at church, my mom decided not to go last night. :( It was weird without her there but thankfully, Amy was going so I could ride with her to class.

Mark said he was going to get there about 5:30 so we got there early, ate at the Taco Bell across the street and went to the dojo. I changed and we stretched. Jim showed Amy some Tae Kwon Do kicks and punches and then Mark made her practice some forward rolls. Then all 4 of us did a slow Round Robin and Mark would pick a technique and do it first on all of us and then we each had a turn trying to do it. We did that until class officially started. Wayne arrived about 10 minutes before it did (start, I mean).

We mostly did Ushiro Tekubitori techniques (mostly Kotigeashi--sp?) and those are always fun. Jim and I were Mark's ukes all night and since there were two beginners there, we rotated between working with either Amy or Wayne. That was fine. ;)

When I was Mark's uke one time, he did something SO weird, and SO odd that it will probably stay with me for years to come (and maybe even keep me awake at night)! We were having trouble figuring out how to do a step and movement with our hand for one of the Ushiro techniques so Mark gave us a visual example. He said, "Has anyone ever seen The 3 Stooges?". The guys had (of course!) but us girls had never really watched it. He then explained about Curly and seeing him one time doing this step motion while going "WOO-WOO-WOO"! And he did it! We all about died laughing & I told him that I wasn't sure if I wanted to be his uke anymore! Joking, of course. His point was that that was the same motion/step we were supposed to be doing and he told us to go ahead and do that "WOO-WOO-WOO!" if we felt like it. Amy and I did NOT do that silly noise and we were trying to be serious doing the techniques but then we started laughing everytime we got to that part with the step as we were remember Mark being silly. And also one time we heard one of the guys at the other end of the dojo do the Curly trademark noise and we cracked up again!

Besides the Ushiro techniques we also did Tsuki Kotegieshi. Mark had to come show Amy how to punch correctly which brought back many memories as I've always been the sissy-ist puncher/striker in the class--and I sometime still am! However, I was Mark's uke for demonstration again a few minutes later and I had to strike tsuki. I did and to my (and everyone else's) surprise, that was one of the best strikes I'd ever done! I saw Jim's eyebrows shoot up with surprise & even though Mark got out of the way (like he always does) before he completed the technique he had to stop and comment to Jim, "Wow! Her strikes are really improving!" That made me feel really good and the rest of the evening I tried to tsuki all my best tsuki's possible! :D

It was a very fun class and I felt encouraged!

Very small class--July 6th

It was indeed a very small class last night! Just my mom and I, Amy, and Peter arrived maybe 10 after 6! Peter had a class of all women! It's a great thing that he showed up though otherwise we wouldn't have had a teacher and my mom and I would have had a more difficult time trying to show Amy easy techniques.

Class started and Peter led us in warm-up-stretches, a little bit of bokkens, low forward rolls around the mat, forward rolls from standing (Amy still was working on the low rolls), and backward rolls around the mat from low then standing, & shikko.

For techniques, we practiced the Yokomen strike/entrance and the basic steps/blending mostly for Amy's sake but it's great for us too. Then we formed a line and we did Yokomenuchi Shiho-Nage. My mom and I both had a hard time doing Shiho-nage with Amy because she didn't know what she was supposed to do and kept turning out of it. (At first she could because we were afraid of hurting her arm so we did it too gently on purpose.) That can be frustrating but it's really good practice for us as most people don't know what to do anyway so we're learning that we really have to be able to do it correctly instead of uke just standing there. Peter showed us that the reason why she was able to keep turning out (when we were trying to do it right on her) was because we were letting her wander out too far away instead of being shoulder to shoulder close & tight. I did it two more times on her and was pleased that on the 2nd time, I actually got through the end without her being able to turn around!! :)

After the Shiho, Peter had us do Yokomenuchi Kotegieshi (sp?) ura (and later omote) which we did in the line again. At the end of class, nage had two attackers (still in the line--not randori) and had to do Shiho on the first uke and Kotegieshi on the second uke and then we did sitting kokkyus and that was it.

When beginners are in the class and they don't know how to turn, step, what to do, etc. it's amazing because I remember being in that same place just a couple of years ago! I've grown so much but I still have a LONG way to go!!!!! It's neat!

Class on July 1st

Nice class last night! Amy rode with us again. :) Jim was there (as usual) and Mark arrived just after us. :D Talked, changed, stretched, etc. Peter, Larry, & new guy Wayne also came. Mark helped Amy with her rolls while Jim and my mom and I reviewed the bokken/footwork from last Thursday.

Class started and Mark had ME lead the bokkens! It's been awhile since I've done that and because it seemed like there were a lot of people there, I felt self-conscious. I knew that I should have explained about the turns or said something to remind Amy about turning her foot so she wouldn't twist her knee but my words got all tangled up so I just counted and called out the turns, etc. Besides getting my words mixed up in my brain I figured Amy would be okay as we had just reminded her about the turns and her knee about 30 minutes before at Taco Bell and Mark was right next to her, helping. When I said, "bokkens down", I was afraid I saw Mark look at me with an odd look which made me worry. Later I asked him if I was a "bokken disgrace" and he said, "no! I wouldn't let you go up there if you were". I felt better after that. :)

For techniques we worked on Kosidori (sp?) Kotigiaishi (sp?), forward roll Ude, and a little bit of Nikkyo. I was with Amy more than I got to be on Tuesday. Particularly, the Nikkyo! I LOVE Nikkyo!!! Both doing it and having it done on me! :D It didn't take much but I felt glad that this technique I was able to successfully explain to her without getting confused.

That's about it. Nice class. :)

Great class on Tuesday!!! So happy!!!

Tuesday's class (6-29-04) was WONDERFUL!!!!!!

My mom just arrived home from work to pick me up for Aikido when my friend, Amy, drove up (she was finally coming & was going to ride with us). My mom and I tried to explain Aikido to her all the way there and even in the Taco Bell across from the dojo while we were eating. After we ate, we let ourselves into the dojo and my mom and I changed into our gi's. Amy surprised me because she was doing all sorts of neat cartwheels and flips on the mats! I didn't know she could do that and I'd kill myself if I tried.

Sensei Mark soon arrived with Larry and I introduced her to them. Peter walked in later. Mark told Larry to show her how to stretch and later the stances and rolls (my mom helped with that) while he changed, put on his hakama, stretched, and then he let me come "play" with him. I did terrible again as usual but I had fun. :) He made me realize that I was giving uke back some distance while doing Irimi Nage when he would suddenly turn and grab me in a bear hug--to show that I was "loosing him". I hope I'll remember that so I can work on it.

Mark started class and we did the bowing and breathing and I realized I forgot to tell Amy about that. Then we did basic stances and turns for Amy's sake and watching her out of the corner of my eye, I realized I also forgot to tell her to make sure her foot pivots enough so she doesn't twist her knees too much!

Technique-wise we did Kotiagieshi (sp?) from Katatori (?--one hand grab), omote (I think!). I went to be with Amy and I was quickly reminded how terrible I often do with beginners as I'm bad at explaining techniques (it's backwards to me) and I'm used to having ukes that know where to go or what to do so it's awkward and Mark had to come help us a few times. Larry was then told to be with her but after that Mark decided that HE would be her partner (which worked out well as there was uneven numbers anyway) and he was for the rest of the class.

Anyway, class turned out to be a LOT of fun!!!! Amy couldn't believe how nice everyone was and she thinks Aikido is really cool and beautiful/graceful. Mark used Peter as his uke all night and it was funny because they showed off a bit for her (with breakfalls, etc.) and an old friend of his who came to watch, so they could both see some of the higher level stuff. :) After class, I asked Mark if he'd do the Ikkyo-Nikkyo-Sankyo-Yonkyo-Gokyo-Kotegi.-Shiho-Irimi-Koshi-nages on me (like he did when Wayne first came) so Amy could see some of the other techniques. He laughed and did it to me with gusto and when I got up again he joked and asked if I wanted him to do it again. I joked back and said, "sure!" and offered my arm but he laughed and kissed my hand instead. How sweet!

Mark asked Amy if she was going to come back on Thursday and she said she'd have to see if she's free and she'd let me know if she could. She is able to come so I called Mark the other day to let him know and he told me that his friend (who watched class) told him later that she could tell that "that girl" must have been doing Aikido for a long time because she looked really good. She meant ME!!!! I'm not "really good" but that made me feel "really good" to get a complement like that and that Mark told me that she said that. :) Very encouraging!
Ah, nice class this morning! :)

Ooooh! I was so tired (as usual) when I got up this morning (6:45)! My stomach never feels well at this time and I'm never able to eat much breakfast (Cheerios) during the ride over to the dojo (25 minutes without traffic).

My mom and I were glad to see that Peter and Jim were there when we arrived. After I came back down from the bathroom, Mr. Larry showed up but said he couldn't teach class because he had Police stuff to do and that he wanted Peter to have us do basic 5th kyu stuff. The dojo list of techniques was gone so Peter asked me for my list. We stretched and Peter started class (Mr. Larry watched the first 10 minutes then he had to leave) and we did forward and backward rolls around the room (my un-awake body was having dizzy/balance problems) and then a little bit of bokkens.

Then we started on our basic 5th kyu techniques in order---

  Shomenuchi Ikkyo (omote & ura)
Shomenuchi Iriminage (the footwork that Jim had us practice on Thursday helped with this)
   Katatetori Shihonage (omote & ura)
Ryotetori Tenshinage (it's been SO LONG since we've done any of this technique we almost forgot about it!)
    Tsuki Kotegaeshi
Ushiro Ryokatatori Kotegaeshi (Peter had to try it several times because he couldn't quite remember how to do it as we lately only been going into Sankyo or Shihonage from that position)
& Morotetori Kokyuho (This was really funny because Peter couldn't think of what that was and I said "it's the same Saturday morning warm-up Kokyus that we always do" but he didn't recognize it at first!!! And he's there and does it almost every Saturday!!!! He finally remembered and felt silly and we all had to laugh!) :D

It was a fun, good class. Saturday's are always good classes but usually I don't enjoy it very much because my body is not awake and I don't feel well. This morning, however, I was awake and enjoyed myself very much! :)

ALSO! At least 20 minutes into class (we were just starting Ikkyo Ura) a man came lurking in the hallway and Peter went out to him and he was interested in Aikido and wanted to watch. He stayed the whole class and afterwards we all talked with him and he even came to coffee with us.

His name is Cletas (sp?-very old fashioned Romanish name) and he's done Tae Kwon Do before and didn't like how commercialized the school he was in and all the other art school's around him were. He said he was fascinated by Aikido and asked good questions like would a small girl like me be able to defend myself against a big guy like Jim. He saw the answer for himself during class (Cletas himself, is a big guy--not overweight but big). Since Jim used to do Tae Kwon Do for many, many years, they had fun talking and Jim got him on the mat and had me slowly do a kotegaeshi on him to show "small me taking his balance". Cletas is a very nice guy and he definitly seems to have a great attitude. It really bothers me when someone will visit or join after they've had other martial experiances and they act & talk arrogant (not everybody acts like that but it's annoying when they do) but Cletas doesn't have any of that! :) He lives a couple hours away but if he likes our place, it's worth it to him to drive out when he can and he'd like to come out for Tuesday's class. I hope he does come because he seems like he might be a nice addition to the class!

Started out disappointing but it turned out well

I was kind of disappointed yesterday. My friend, Amy, who was supposed to come visit class last night couldn't come because a program she was involved in, somebody dropped out and she had to fill in for them. She promises to come next Tuesday. I left a message on Sensei Mark's cell phone to let him know that she couldn't come but that I hoped that he'd be able to make it anyway.

My mom and I won 2 new bokkens off of Ebay last week and it was a big surprise when they arrived yesterday! Yea! One seems to be slightly lighter in weight than the other so I choose that one. ;)

Went to class later with our new bokkens. It was very dark & stormy looking outside (and heard later that it was really thunderstorming in some parts of the city) so that's probably why Mark and most everyone else didn't show up. It was just us, Jim, and new guy Wayne showed up late.

Jim taught and we did a neat exercise with the bokkens that Mauricio used to have us do a lot. Great blending and footwork/offline practice and we got to try out our new bokkens. I really like mine! The rest of the class was basically footwork and after being such a walking disaster on Tuesday, it was good to work on that. :)

I was disappointed at first that Amy couldn't have come but it worked out better that she didn't as it was stormy and we didn't have an "official" teacher. I was also disappointed that more people didn't show up for class but it turned out to be a nice class anyway.

"I don't know ANYTHING!!!!"

.....and that's exactly how I felt (my mom too) last night (6-22-04).

>sigh< Class was a little bit strange on Tuesday and I can't quite put my finger on why. I think it must have been the atmostphere---hardly anybody was there and it just seemed oddly quiet. Sensei Mark came (which was a great thing otherwise we wouldn't have had a teacher!) and otherwise it was just him, my mom and I, and another guy. A visitor came but just to watch---he said he does cage fighting and asked if Aikido would have anything that might help him. Mark said it did and they talked for a few minutes. (IMHO--I've heard a couple of people somewhere else on the internet who cage fight say that Aikido footwork helps them.)

Later, after we stretched, to kill time before class, Mark lets me come "play" with him (which I like) but I couldn't get anything to work!!! I go through stages of flinching a lot and not but this class I was horrible at flinching and I haven't been that bad for a long time! On the other hand, Mark was attacking/grabbing me Katatori Menuchi (I think that's right--grab one jacket lapel and strike Shomen with other hand) and it's been a long time since I've tried doing any techniques from that attack so I can't be expected to remember everything right? I felt embarrassed with the visitor watching though. :o

    Class itself was ---
A lot of bokken cuts then pairing up like we did when Bill broke my bokken and the guy I was with wasn't striking my bokken correctly so I had an awkward time doing it right. But I'm sure it wasn't all his fault, in his defense.

After that, Sensei Mark had my mom as uke (she was used most of the night) and uke strikes Shomenuchi and he enters in with his arms up in an Irimi block and did Irimi Nage. We partnered up and since there was only 3 students, Mark rotated and worked with one of us and that was nice. But all 3 of us students was having such a hard time for some reason getting the basic entry (it was a little bit different than how we normally practice it) so poor Mark had to digress and make us do nage-uke-mirror-image-blending exercises.

Next we TRIED to do the same entry but with Sankyo and we had problems with that too! Sensei Mark was brave when he made it more complecated by having uke strike several times in a row (after nage does certain techniques) so it was like Shomen (uke), Sankyo (nage) tskui (sp?--uke), and Kotigieshi (nage) all in a row.

As all 3 of us were having problems last night, the person who was with Mark at that turn had the best chance of being sure that we're doing it right. My mom and I kept getting confused when we were together and being with the other guy was a bit frustrating as he did the various techniques partly right but everything else wrong and he kept trying to tell me (us) how to do it correctly--while he was still getting most of it wrong himself but he probably didn't know it.

My mom and I both felt rather stupid and "I don't know ANYTHING!" last night (the other guy probably thought he did almost everything right) and I hope that Mark isn't discouraged. It was just an "off" night and I think Mark's main focus was that all 3 of us should be past the basic thinking of step 1, step 2, step 3, etc. and he's trying to get us out of that and into the flowy, one-motion mindset. As I said, a bad night for me to start flinching like a fool!

.....But we're still glad that we went to class though. I just need to look forward and just relax and have a good time no matter if I'm doing techniques beautifully or terribly! And I am looking forward to Thursday! :) As far as plans go, Amy (a girl from my church) is interested in Aikido and is either going to watch or participate. I tried to explain some things about Aikido but I'm still not sure if she has any clue of what it's really like. So it'll probably be interesting! Mark promised that he'll make a special point to come since she's supposed to be visiting. :)

My Bokken Broke!!!!

Last night's class was a lot of fun! Sensei Mark arrived shortly before my mom and I did and we had fun talking about Lord of the Rings, etc. Larry and "Bokken" Bill showed up too. :) Before class, Mark bowed to me inviting me to "play" but he didn't cream me like he usually does (which is fun in itself). This time he would have me attack him a certain way and he'd do a technique on me 2 or 3 times (mostly just to show me what to do) and then I'd have my turn trying to do it. 2 of the techniques were Jujinage and Koshinage but they were alright. (Background if anyone actually reads this is that for the first 3 1/2 years of Aikido, I have had a HUGE fear of breakfalls and any techniques involving straight down rolls or breakfalls would make me feel nauseous and my whole body would shake, etc. January 2004, I had a great breakthrough with breakfalls and even though I'm still just a little bit uneasy about them, I don't have a trace of that old fear anymore!!!!) We also did Shihonage and Nikkyo from Hanmi Handachi (been ages since we've done that). We "played" until class started.

Mark led us in some bokken cuts as warm up and then we partnered up (2 people in a group) and took turns striking and blocking/getting out of the way with our bokkens. I was with my mom at first and I always enjoy being with her. (We talk so much about Aikido at home we know what the other one likes and doesn't like and can tell how the other is feeling about a certain technique.) Then we rotated and "Bokken" Bill came to me. That's no problem except he was sure hitting my bokken with a lot of power (making me flinch everytime). Then, it happened..."Bokken" Bill BROKE my bokken!!!!!! I couldn't believe it! It just snapped the 20th time or so that he struck it with his! I am aware that bokkens are just the practice swords and they can wear out and break from practice but that was the first time I've ever seen that actually happen to anyone much less to ME!!! (And much less to the bokken that my dad carved for me!!!!) I would have been more upset if it wasn't kind of funny and now this is an instant legend. :) Sometimes I might occasionally hear stories of "Remember when so and so was practicing with a bokken and accidentally hit the lights and glass was all over the mat..." or other stories not as extreme but equally accidental and kind of funny. Now there's going to be a story of "Remember when Bill broke Robyn's bokken...." :) Anyway, Mark handed me a Jo and we continued the block and strike for another few minutes. After class, I did tell Bill that now I'm going to start calling him "Broken Bokken Bill" and he and everyone else laughed. :D Maybe my dad can get a strong wood glue and fix it as it's in a clean break (slanted angle) but that might not work. I might just have to buy a bokken off of E-bay.

For the rest of the class we did 2nd kyu techniques from mostly Ushiro Kubishimi (but I didn't really recognize it was 2nd kyu until later). I was Mark's uke while he demonstrated Ushiro Kubishimi Sankyo. Mark's taller than me so I had to stand on my toes so I could properly grab him around the neck. He only used me as his uke just that one time but that probably was mainly due to the problems with the height difference. After he and Bill demonstrated for Ushiro Kubishimi Koshinage, he told Bill, my mom, and Larry to work in a group of three while he would work with "the delicate flower"! I laughed at that and he added on "even a rose has it's thorns" and I couldn't help thinking of that old song by Poison. ;) I appreciated him helping me with Koshinage and he even pin pointed why my breakfalls hurt more than they're supposed to. I'm coming untucked and landing more sideways barrel-ish and I'm landing harder on certain parts of my body than I should be. That was good to know and I'll have to remember to flip over straighter (like a forward roll) the next time I do breakfalls. :)

We also did Shomenuchi Iriminage, Katatori Nikkyo, and Yokomenuchi Kotegaeshi from Hanmi Handachi (all 2nd kyu) and that was great practice too. :) Although my beloved bokken broke and some of the techniques were hard, it was a fun class and I'm thankful that I got to be there and participate. ;)

A little bit of Encouragement :)

(I suppose I'll just break down and call people in my class by their names since other people do it. If somebody from my class finds my journal online, then I'll just have to suffer as uke if they read something about themselves that they don't like.)

Last weeks classes were very encouraging! Well, I was a little disappointed that my favorite sensei, Mark wasn't there (he's my favorite because he's was my first and main sensei for the first several years and he never intimidated me like the other guys did from time to time). My mom and I (and the other students) were happy and thankful when Bill arrived. Otherwise we wouldn't have had a teacher! We call Bill "Bokken Bill" sometimes because when he teaches, he's a great teacher but he often likes to have us do around 400 bokken cuts and that gets very tiring!

Tuesday was one of those classes of at least 300 bokken cuts (I'm glad that my bokken is the lightest one in the dojo!) but the rest of the class was neat and fun with Ikkyo, Nikkyo, and just barely got to Sankyo from the Yokomenuchi strike. :)

Thursday was even better as Bokken Bill added variety in the bokken cuts (95 and 180 turns, tenkan and cut, and 8 directional starting from both left and right hanmi). Technique-wise, we picked up from where we were on Tuesday. We started with Shomenuchi Ikkyo and then uke gets up and attacks Yokemen and nage does Ikkyo again (omote with the Shomen and ura from Yokomen) and we added Nikkyo and Sankyo until we had 6 continuous attacks and techniques in a row. It got rather tiring as uke to keep getting up and down but it was fun! Wayne (the new guy) had to work on Yokemenuchi Ikkyo (omote and ura) almost the whole class but he was allowed to have the other techniques done on him so he could feel it. heh heh

Anyway, the encouraging part was that when I was nage with Henry, I actually felt like I was blending pretty well! My techniques with him felt more flowy and I wasn't hesitating as much! I actually got complemented not just from Henry but from Bill too several times! And Bill doesn't say "good!" as readily as some of the other sensei's might. Besides usually I don't blend very well so I hardly ever get praised for it! :) We also did Randori at the end--uke striking only Shomen or Yokomen and nage doing only Ikkyo, Nikkyo, or Sankyo. I was the last one for a turn and Henry and big Jim were my ukes. I messed up like usual once or twice but I did manage to get Henry in a Sankyo lock and I kept him in-between Jim and I so Jim couldn't get to me (Mark taught me that, I think). Bill clapped to end my turn and also end class but to my surprise, when we were all in seiza getting ready to bow, he looked at me and said, "Excellent use of strategy using Henry as a shield"!!!!! He said it just to me in front of the whole class!!! What a great feeling! :D Every Aikidoka/Aikidoist has there good training days and their bad training days but this was a good day!

I really do want to have good techniques someday! There are some people that I know (who shall remain nameless) who can do the techniques well but they are rough or go too fast and uke at times struggles to keep up and new students are overwhelmed or are intimidated. I find going to fast leads to too many mistakes and jerky-ness--especially on my part. I try to do my techniques slower but in one motion (my problem is that I hesitate too much!). Once I get the techniques correct (with the right torque, stay in center, other basics, etc.) then I should be able to speed up IF I HAVE TO while still maintaining correct control and not hurt uke! I want to be a good Aikidoka that can do techniques "right on" and smoothly and also someone who nobody would mind being partnered with! I'm working on it and Thursday was just a little taste! Hopefully, in another 4 years, I'll be at the point. :)

My first Journal Entry! (I hope this works)

Oh wow, this journal feature is really cool! I only first discovered it about a week ago but I didn't have time to write anything at the time. I apologize to anyone who might read this because I basically write how I talk so the grammar might not be at its best.

A quick review from last weeks classes-----Saturday morning (May 15th), it was pouring down rain and storming! My mom and I get to class and only J (I might only use first initials for names so I won't over reveal anything) and the new guy W was there. We kept waiting for Mr. L (head sensei) to arrive and J called him but he his street was flooded so he couldn't leave his house. J decided to teach the class of basics (mainly for the new guys benefit) and that was fine for us. He actually took up some time showing us some Tai Chi moves and that was our stretches. It was quite neat actually. Then we did bokken and jo work and basic turns and techniques (mostly practice of getting "offline"). I'm always very tired in the morning and the early Saturday morning classes are always a struggle to get through but this class was much easier because it was at a much slower pace. :)

The next Tuesday class (May 18th), my favorite sensei M was there and black belt (sometime sensei) P was there too. My mom and I told them about Saturday's class and Sensei M asked me why I didn't teach class because I was of higher rank than J. We were all laughing so I'm hoping he was only half serious. My mom and I are both 3rd kyu while as J has been doing Aikido with us for a couple of years and has never tested, he holds multiple black belt ranking in Tae Kwon Do and probably high ranking in several other arts too. Sensei M was joking that I could have said to J that "he may be high ranking in other arts, in HERE I out rank you so blah, blah, blah." I explained to M and P that no way would I want to teach because I feel like I KNOW the techniques okay and how to do them but I do NOT know how to EXPLAIN things (how to take what's in my head and form it to words). Because I said that, after M started the class, he made me lead the class in the bokkens! It's been a LONG time since he made me do that but I refused to let myself feel horrified and get nervous so I just got my bokken out of the closet and I think I did okay. M also used me as his uke for half of the night but that's no big deal as he's been using me more often lately and most of the time, I really enjoy it. It was overall a really fun class. :)

Last Saturday's class (I'm caught up to date now)/ May 22nd----Mr. L was there to teach class like normal this morning. J and P were also there besides my mom and I. New guy W came too. Since Saturday's is really an intermediate class, Mr. L has one person go over and teach the new guy basics while everyone else is working on intermediate stuff. P was over there helping W first and the rest of us are making our best attempt at this technique that is supposed to be easy but it's really very complex (like all techniques are actually). 20 minutes into that, Mr. L comes to me and says something along the lines of "Guess what, I'm going to have you help W with forward and back rolls." I'm sure my eyes must have popped out and I started to say, "But I don't know how to explain things well..." but he told me to relax and he showed me what he wanted me to have W do. A minute later he claps and brings P back and I go over to W. It wasn't so bad at all really! If W was a big scary guy then I would have been intimidated and would have had a harder time but it wasn't like that. I had W do the "rocking chairs" (roll back and up again) like Mr. L wanted me to, and then low forward and back rolls from there. I instructed and demonstrated what I could (I was afraid to be talking or correcting too much and be discouraging or bossy but I don't think I was). Mr. L came over a couple of times to assist me or tell me to watch W and see if he's rolling straight on his spine and hitting his head or rolling shoulder to hip like he's supposed to. Sometimes it's obvious and easy to tell the difference when watching somebody but my eyes are experienced enough to see those things well yet so I often had problems being able to tell if W was rolling shoulder to hip or if he veered (sp?) at times. Mr. L and the other black belts can just look at somebody rolling and immediately see what they're supposed to but I guess that I'm starting to learn. Anyway! I don't know how long I was over with W (20 minutes at least) before Mr. L brought me back in and J took over with him (my mom had to teach him too). It was an interesting experience to "teach". Mr. L said to me during coffee after class that he's probably going to have me do more of it (if the new guy's there) because it's good practice for me. That both makes me feel nervous but also pleased that he thinks enough of me to want to start learning things like this since someday in the FAR future (I've been in Aikido for almost 4 years), I do hope to be a black belt and when that happens, I'll have to be somewhat comfortable and confident enough in my techniques to teach a class if I have to. All part of the journey! :)

Well, I wrote about 3 classes in my first journal entry. I mainly wanted to write about last Saturday's and my first time "teaching" but I felt like giving the background of the first couple of classes since it leads into the last one. I do have a Aiki-Journal notebook that I have written and recorded in for a couple of years but I'm really behind in it. I believe the last entry was August of last year! I hope to catch up with the important happenings but in the meantime, this online Journal is awesome and easier to write in! :)
