OK I usually do not submit self absorbed things like this but I broke my bird finger. OK it is actually re-broken. I am not happy because it is going to put an unwanted intermission in my training. I know I can do bokken and jo kata stuff. I can do shadow forms but it is not the same as throwing and being thrown. The broken finger is actually a good thing because it has forced me to the orthopedic doctor. It is a group of sports doctors. The finger was probably broken before and I did not realize it. It is chipped on the second joint. I will likely see the hand guy if it stays stiff and does not limber back up. I also have a soft tissue injury to my right knee that I have been ignoring for over 2 years now. (I did not want to stop training). I just live with a brace on during every waking hour on my knee. Well since I was there I saw the knee guy. The xray showed nothing like I thought. I got an MRI today and we will see what that shows. I am just frustrated because I had been in a lull and just mentally prepared to focus and train harder. Now depending on these injuries I will have to wait a while. AARGH :grr:

Pun intended. :) As for training with the other hand. You cannot always guarantee what the other guy is going to do or the guys training next to you. It needs time to heal up. I cannot take ukemi until it is better. This has forced me to get attention for my knee anyway and that will be a good thing in the long run.

Honestly didnít think of that when I typed it, I had to take a month off not so long ago with back problems I started off very annoyed with myself but then put it into perspective a month off to heal an injury or a lifetime of back ache !! Also took this time to sit and catch up with some new aikido books I had purchased and some stretching which I needed, when I went back I was so fresh in the body and mind I almost think of it as a good thing now not bad.

Sometimes an injury gives one an opportunity to re-focus and look for the meanings of what one is doing out there on the mat, or to get into the books and delve a little into Aikido history or spiritual implications. Turn your frustration into constructive feelings of curiosity. Ask yourself questions and analyze the answers. Of course, if none of this works, there's always BEER... :D

Ah, Beer waza, but I have that anyway. I will go and watch it will just be bit before I can get on the mat again. Certainly my bokken and jo work can use some polishing. I may join a health club to try and keep from getting out of shape. there is nothing like getting back on the mat and sucking air. I was just into a new (to me) Aikido book so this will give me some time for that. Maybe I will get some Aikido DVD's to watch. I have settled down a little since my original post. Thank you Clark and everyone else.

OK an update the knee has torn cartilage that has shown up in the MRI. Anybody have any experiences with this. I go back to the knee doctor on Tuesday to explore my options.

Well I'm assuming its one of the meniscus (Not sure the actual plural on that one) I've torn both of mine and had a menisectomy (sp) Unfortunately I cant give you much more info than that, it was long (maybe a month) after that surgery that I had to get a previously owned ACL put into that same knee. (MRI was unconclusive on the state of My ACL and the Doc used the first surgery to get a first hand look to see where my ACL actually was) I was able to walk after a week for the first surgery but very unstable due to the lack of ACL. After the ACL surgery it has taken me over a year to get to the point of being able to do anything more athletic than walking and standing. Just picked up aikido and its a bit painful, not sure if its the lack of use or the old injury. I cannot sit in seiza. I've only been on the mat 3 times so far and I'm definately feeling it, all over, esp. the knee. Anyways depending on the Meniscus tear the surgery isnt too invasive and recovery time is fairly short. I'm sure the Doc will go through all that with you.

I had my knee scoped October 1'st. I waited the full 8 weeks and did physical therapy before getting back to aikido. Have some residual soreness, and don't have full range of motion yet. But its a lot better than before surgery. Most folks at the dojo say it takes 6 months to get almost completely recovered.

I've seen folks teach and take ukemi the day after surgery. I've seen folks where the surgery just didn't help.

I can relate. In early October I fell wrong on my right hand and severed a tendon on my right pinkie. I don't remember the technique, I think it was irimi nage and I was uke. Anway, instead of slapping the mat with an open palm, I slapped with my fingers slightly bent. That was enough to break the tendon on my pinkie. It didn't hurt, I just couldn't straighten my pinkie. I went in and visited my doctor the next day, then the orthopetic surgeon after that. I had the surgery done on 10/14/05 and my finger is still in a splint. It's getting better, but progress is slow. For now, my surgeon discourages me from doing something that may cause me to reinjure my finger. I have not trained on the mat since then. Instead I have focused on weight training and aerobics on various machines along with some reading of Aikido books. My wife loves having me home in the evening to help with my 3 youngest sons and I do enjoy being with them and helping her when they get to be more demanding. I still have to wear the splint for at least another six weeks (until mid-February) so I'll probably start to work on things like bokken and jo to ease myself back in. I definitely miss the training on the mat, but try to keep it in perspective as well. It's a temporary setback that brings opportunities to work on different aspects of Aikido. When suffering an injury that keeps you off the mat, it is important to do some different type of training to help fill the void. In addition to the weight training, I've also taken up shooting sporting clays with friends from work. My eldest son recently hurt his knee and is probably going to need ACL surgery. He's frustrated at not being able to do something he loves, i.e. playing soccer, so we're trying to get him involved in doing something that can help him endure the surgery and recuperation. I'm fortunate that my injury did not interfere with other aspects of my training or my life in general.
