Hi there,

I have a quick question regarding the meaning of sho:

I have read that "sho" in shodan means "first". I have also read that "sho" means "small". Are there two different kanji for sho or are they the same? And how does all of that relate to shoshin?

Actually, on second glance, this does not seem a small question at all ;) I would be grateful if you took the time to explain.

Thanks bunches,
Sonja

初段 shodan meaning first level
小 shou meaning small when attached to another kanji like
shougakusei elementary student
初心者 shoshinsha meaning beginner, beginning heart person.

so if you can't see the kanji the shodan and the shoshisha uses the same first kanji.

as far as kanji with sho and shou, there are a lot. one of those fun things about the japanese language. just shou there were 144. :(
