Why were you just wondering Adrian? This does not seem the sort of question people just wonder about w/o an agenda-IMHO.

Ahh...Fair enough. Many of the old guard both pre-war and post war (war =WWII) smoked it was the thing to do & also very true for the ppl in both our countries as well during that time. It was the thing to do when I grew up in a much later generation (and I was stupid enough to follow-but I am smoke free going on 8 years), it has taken a long time for the habit of smoking to become less the thing - but it still has a following.

do you smoke?

Nope, never have and never will. Having to clean out my mum's dirty ashtrays as a kid and then watch her die in agony from lung cancer when I was still in my teens did a good job of making me never start.

Dumb habit.

We're not allowed to smoke in the dojo ;)

We have some smokers in our Aikido group. Two of them need a cigarette at least after training, sometimes one just before.

And many of the Japanes Shihan seem to smoke, if that is not also some of these legends.

Yamada did at least a few years ago. His seminars had breaks to let him get a cigarette or two.
And Asai did, too as far as I recall.

I do not.

Still smoking here...just tried to quit again, but need to make a fresh start.

If you don't, don't start. Its a pain in the *ss.

Best,

Smoked 5 cigars in my life, all in the period of about a month. Then I realized *ponders* 'what did I realize' . . . Well never smoked since. (1 year)

I have before and probably will again. When I do, it is very infrequently and almost like a "special event." During the past year, I have smoked maybe three fancy cigars at a cigar lounge, a dozen cigerettes, and one or two hookahs at local Arab cafe.

In other words, I am not really a habitual smoker or anything. I keep my level of intake low because I really don't want to become dependent on it.

I have never really noticed if anyone else at my dojo does, but obviously not during training ;)

maybe not the quality of your aikido. but im thinking your endurance and breath control would definatly be affected.
