Here's a question for you all:

One of my dojo mates used to be thin and wiry and used to take really good ukemi and also make falls and rolls look effortless and light...anyway, he took a break from aikido for about a couple of years and when he got back, he sort of bulked up in the upper body area.
these days when he takes ukemi, does his falls etc..he says his shoulders hurt and the side of his chest (are they laterals?) he also mentions that he could tolerate the locks and pins less than he used to...

my question is: What do you think can be the matter?
Do you have any suggestions how to get his former facility back? I suspect that the bulk he added on his frame now affects the rolls and falls he is doing but I don't know much about how and what can be done to help improve his performance.

One of the beauties of Aikido is that the pain from joint locks is created by the extension of the joints' natural range of movement. The only way to decrease the pain is to practice more! The more you practice the more the joints are stretched and the more you can tolerate.

I too have gained more poundage since by wiry days of 23! Personally, I feel everyone needs to go back and reexamine their own breakfalls periodically to see what needs to be tweaked. We are all constantly changing and need to make adjustments to suit.

Personally, I feel everyone needs to go back and reexamine their own breakfalls periodically to see what needs to be tweaked seconded - am I getting lazy about my backward ukemi (happily I blame aged joints rather than my own ineptitude)

If your friend has bulked up without continuing any type of stretching, they probably just have increased their short muscle mass (paw, correct terms here please and your usual useful links) giving them less flexibility.

Maybe its not your friends bulking up that has caused his bad ukemi, maybe it was his 2-year break. Just a thought.

If you bulk up without doing anything to retain flexibility you'll stiffen up. Maybe your buddy needs to strech more.

When I'm light, taking ukemi is soft as can be. When I'm fat, I get hurt frequently.

When I started weightlifting my ukemi became much much easier and less painful so I don't think it is the bulking up that is causing the problem, it is probably the 2 year absence. However, if the bulking up you mentioned is mostly fat then I can see that being a major cause of problems.

aha, so i will pass on all this information to him, soon. thank you everyone, i am very grateful for your input.

i think that i will just have to tell him:
1. re-examine his basic front and back rools and see where he needs tweaking/dfine tuning
2. just practice and his body will find its way into less pain
3. stretch a lot and continue training
4. not to be gone for so long!!!

if anyone has anymore to add, i would really appreciate this. thank you again!

I've gone up and down with muscle mass since starting aikido, and while I'm sure experience helps I've noticed the stronger I am the less injuries I get. I think the increased strength helps protect the joints when mistakes happen and I often recommend doing some pushups to help prevent shoulder injuries.

Huummm....is it left side chest pain? :eek: :crazy: :dead:

I once had that weird pain in shoulder and chest that come and gone over a few months...finally thought i had a broken rib....guess what i was suffering from a pneumothorax i.e., a leaking lung! (search on google, too long to explain).

My advice: don't mess with chest pain :uch: ...

Any time you put on muscle mass (or any other type of mass, for that matter) in one part of your body or another, the center of gravity will shift, minutely or not, and your ukemi will need to shift, as well.

As mentioned above, if you pause/quit/take a break you get stiff. Only not in the right place. Oops... :D
