Hi all,

I am looking for an online shop that sells hakama in colours other than black, navy or white (actually I am looking for an aubergine/bordeaux coloured one). Does anybody know any suppliers that offer that?

Thanks for your help,
Sonja

Sonia,

Meirin sells several colors and materials. Contact Peter Boylan (peter at budogu dot com) to inquire.

You could always buy a white cotton one and DYE (http://www.ritdye.com/) it any color you want.

Chuck, I have contacted Peter, thank you!

I might also consider dying it, thanks for the tip!

Be carefule about dyeing them.. My wife & I had some nice white hakama made for our wedding, with the idea of dying them black later for use on the mat.

First, the dye - we did use RIT - didn't take too well, so my hakama came out gray instead.
Second, the material for the hakama wasn't pre-shrunk, so after the dyeing and drying, it came to just below my knees.

Boy does it look silly now!

You could also make your own... get the material and a pattern, which is what we did for our wedding some years ago (I try not to think about how many!) :D

Doesn't saying that "dead men do not wear plaid hakama" imply that the living could. I guess as long as your breathing you should go for it :D

There is a good alternative to RIT, but the shrinkage issue will still come into play with the hot-water set and rinse cycles: Procion Fiber Reactive Dye, which works with all natural fabrics.

However....many "all cotton" garments are made with nylon thread, so you have to be careful unless you like the residual white thread flash.

The best one stop shop for dyes, fabric paint, batik supplies and dyeable clothing items I've ever encountered is:

I'm quite happy with the turquoise fade (dark at the bottom, light at the top) hakama I just did using their stuff, though the places I can wear it without people having something between a minor and major flipout seem pretty limited.

Speaking of colored hakamas....someone owes me a place where I can get a pink one...
