ummm.... i highly reccomend it.

i really enjoy doing jo techniques, and i feel like it helps a lot with my general movement and footwork and learning how to always be in the correct stance.

In our style (Nishio-ryu) working with the jo is an integrated part of the regular practice. Basically we use the jo to learn more about distance, footwork and the 'contact' to your partner.

If you stumble upon some of Nishio senseis videos then you can see what I'm talking about.

Maybe your sensei would be willing to give you some private lessons for jo technique.
When dealing with weapons, and any martial art. Unless you have an instructor to guide you, books and the internet are a bad way to learn. The best use for them is as a reference to illustrate what your instructor is teaching you.
