View Full Version : Knee / Lower Leg question

My tibia protrudes rather profoundly below my kneecap making Seiza and Shikko both rather painful ordeals. It ends up that my weight rests on the raised portion of the tibia rather than across the entire length of the leg which is quite uncomfortable in and of itself, but I would imagine that putting my weight on the bones protrusion is none too good for the bone either.
My question is this, I am considering a set of knee pads, or a brace or support of some sort but I wish for something which will accommodate the issue at hand and was wondering what advice you might share with me? I examined some neoprene knee wraps which seemed to extend the appropriate distance but lacked thickness which I imagine would be needed (perhaps not – if so please correct my ignorance). There were some with open and closed knee openings, knee pads of many different descriptions (sporting goods, construction, etc)
Any recommendations you might care to share would be much appreciated as I would very much like to work around this issue. I have tried to ‘tough it out’ figuring that I would get used to the discomfort, but I am 6 months into Aikido now and I do not believe the pain will diminish with practice.

Try to find something with the back cut out. This will put less strain on the inside of your knee during seated stuff.

Since you don't have a problem with your patella of interior knee pain, you should find something that's open in the back so it doesn't wrinkle when you bend your knee and hurt. You should look for something with gel or silicon padding that will distribute your weight around the bony part, I'm sure there is something out there, maybe ask an orthopedic doctor.

This sounds alot like osgood shlatters diesease.
If it is, i've been using accupuncture for it for a while now. It may be able to help control pain if you can afford it.

Nathan, someone told me about that the other day. He said if you had it when you were younger, it could pull the bone away slightly, then heal itself which causes calcified bone to be left there.
I don't ever recall having pains in my younger days, but I have a spur on both legs right under my knee caps.
I hate to knee walking. People don't understand the pain either. :grr: They just tell you it will get better. This is just not true.
Anyway, check here (http://www.weplay.com/wrestling/knee/pads/). The Adidas ones are really good. I use them for Brazilian Jiujitsu.

Thanks for the replies so far everyone. I will look for a brace or pad with the back cut out and speak to my physician about other options.

I purchased some plain neoprene wraps to hold me over untill the pads Tim reccomended come in. Thanks again to everyone who provided advice.

Sounds like Osgood-Schlatter's to me as well. If it continues, get it x-rayed. There may be special knee braces that can be ordered from orthopedic supply houses.

This may sound stupid to u... but in volleyball we wear these little knee pads that cover the specific area that you are talking about. They are also very flexible to move in and they provide a good amount of padding , but they arent too thick , so they are still discreet. They are also made to be sliding across the floor in so i dont see why these wouldnt work. I realize they arent made for martial arts but im sure they would be fine. Go to a local sporting goods store and check some out they may end up working for u

Paige, I think what you mentioned are made from cotton. Lycra and neoprene dry better and I think they feel better. What brand are they? I'll check them out. Thanks.
