hello,
I've been training for just over three years in Yoshokai.
Yoshokai Aikido was developed by Takeda Kushida Sensei. He studied under Shioda Sensei. In the 70's he came to the States as, as I understand it, the head of Yoshinkan for this country (of course, still under Shioda Sensei). During the early nineties, there was an amicable split and Kushida Sensei left Yoshinkan and began teaching on his own.
As I understand it, Kushida Sensei continues to teach the same Aikido that he taught prior to the split.
I express this only to let you all know the lineage of Aikido I study. However, the Aikido that I practice is my own. Although, I do what appears, to me, to be the same technique as Kushida Sensei, my technique is different. The same applies to my interpretation of the philosophy and theories of these Aikidos.
Therefore, the views I express are independent of Yoshokai Aikido. They are my perceptions of Aikido.
Okay, enough with the heavy stuff. I live in a suburb of Detroit MI. I'm moving (my excuse) and have been away from the dojo for a little while (three months). But expect to be returning very soon.
I love to train. I love to train everyday. I prefer to take one technique and do it again and again. It seems like a lot of people prefer to do a technique a couple times and move on to the next.
One of the reasons I love Aikido is because I see every technique as a complex puzzle in which there's many secrets to unlock. I find the challenge exhilerating and rewarding.
Another reason I love Aikido is that I can apply the principles to everyday life. For example, today I had a problem with my landlord. I was revving up to "give her a piece of my mind." Out of the blue, I said to myself,"that's not the Aikido way." I took a few minutes and approacher her with an offer that ended up with both of us getting what we wanted while I didn't move from my original position.
I recognize, and apply, the philosophical side of Aikido. However, I practice it as a martial art. I figure if I wanted enlightenment, I'd do sitting meditation. I wanted physical exercise, I'd go to the gym. So, the reason I train Aikido is because I want to be bad.
Well, that's it for now. Thanks for reading.
