I am going to rural northern Japan on a 3 month cultural exchange program. Can anyone offer some do's, don'ts, bits of advice? I know that gift giving is customary when visiting someone; what would be appropriate? I think I'll be staying with a local family, but i'm not certain about that. Basically I need to know everthing I can so I can represent my dojo well. Please help.

As always, the search function is your first recourse. There're a lot of requests here and on the other boards identical to yours.

Also, the Culture Shock series' edition on Japan, of course.

And, Kiss, Bow, or Shake Hands: How to Do Business in Sixty Countries by Terri Morrison, et al

But there's tons of stuff on the boards specifically directed to your situation if you're willing to do the leg (key) work.
