I am about to take my 5th kyu test (within a week) and I am working on the memorization of technique names. I know all the techniques, but I can't match the names to the techniques :(
On my requirements sheet, it looks like this:
Shomenuchi:
Ikkyo
Iriminage
Kotegaeshi
etc.
What does it mean to have ikkyo, seemingly in shomenuchi?
Excuse my newbishness, but I don't understand how this works.
Thanks in advance,
Molinjir

Paul, you really should be working with a senior student to prepare for the test, including understanding the naming of things.
Shomenuchi is an attack. The others are techniques to be applied.

If you do not understand, maybe you are testing too soon.

I understand how you think that, but the dojo I am in works mostly as a silent dojo, with only sensei speaking. I can easily memorize it in a week. Thanks though, because now I understand how the whole thing works :)

Paul: The best way to remember techniques is with the following: the first term is the attack (shomenuchi-a strike to the front of the head), the second term is the response (ikkyo-number one technique with pin), and if a third term it is the modifier (omote-to the front, ura to the rear, tenkan turning, irimi entering, soto outside, uchi inside). Modifiers describe where you move to or how you move in general.
