I have a new colleague in our Aikido class who has just bought a Gi. He has asked me if there is a 'correct' or traditional way to tie the waistband on the trousers? I have already supplied him with information on care of the suit, and how to tie the Obi, learnt from my days in a strictly traditional Judo class as a child. can anyone help with this trouser question?!

I've always tied it like a double-knotted shoe, and it's worked fine for me... as for any traditonal way, I'll have to look into it. Kano, the founder of Judo, more or less "invented" the modern judogi, so if there's any sort of "correct" method, you probably learned it during those judo classes.

As long as they don't fall down during class, I don't mind how they're tied...
