Hey everyone,
It seems my company just got a gig in Jamaica and sometime relatively soon I will be going down for an "Extended" stay to over see the deployment and maintenance of our software. (We're think for about 3 months a year). So I'm just curious anyone know any good dojos down there? I don't know where on the island I will be.

Thanks,
Robert

Man, dojo's in jamaica? That sounds awesome. Wouldn't it be fun to practice aikido with the rastas? That could be a trip X-)

Jamaica Aikikai
21 Clieveden Ave., Apt. 16
Kingston, 6 Jamaica
Instructor: Derek Dodd

That's the only dojo i've been able to find listed in jamaica. No idea how close it is to montego.

Robert:

So now you're going to become an international aikidoka. Jamaica-wild. I wonder if they got hit by the hurricanes.

P.S. Your profile still shows you up here in desolate Midland not in the Houston area.

Hope to see you at the seminar in Corpus.

Hi folks,

As far as I know, Jamaica got a piece of Ivan when it passed a few weeks ago through the Caribbean. They got some damage, communications were down, roads were impassable and a state of emergency was declared but lifted now I think, they were not as badly hit as some of the other islands though.

Montego Bay is at the Northern coast of the island whilst Kingston, the Capital is near the South East coast. May be a bit of a drive I think to get to the Dojo.

I've got a few e-mails from folks there about starting up a dojo in Jamaica so as far as I know there are no Aikido groups there (or at least no internationally affiliated ones) but I could be wrong. If Jamaica Aikikai is still operational please do let us know as I'm trying to create some links with Aikido across the Caribbean.

Too bad you won't be coming as far south as Trinidad Robert.:)

Have fun, and try a Red Stripe whenever you happen by a bar.:) The jerk pork or jerk chicken good too if you like spicy food.:)

Of course Capoeira is a Brazilian evolution of parts of an African martial art. For those who may not know.:)

Not found only in Jamaica.:)

(Damn those Tekken stereotypes:p)

Did you ever get in touch with Jamaica Aikikai?

Robert Jackson

Not yet. from my searches thats the only aikido dojo in Jamaica.
It's in Kingston and from the map it looks like its on the other side of the island. Kind of a long drive. I'm guessing I'll wait until I get down there and see what I see.

Please don't forget that if you find dojo out there that are not in the AikiWeb Dojo Search Engine, I and many others who may need to find such a dojo would appreciate it if you could submit the information into the database:

Thanks,

On a lighter side of Jamaica and Aikido - I hear that if you "take a smoke" with the local "ras" before training one can get to train with Tengu.:p

Just a lil Caribbean weed humour.
