Hello, one and all.

Recent events have forced me to stay off the mat for the last three months or so. I thought I'd be dying to resume training now that I have the opportunity, but...well. I'm not. In fact, I have no real desire to go back at all.

This is worrying to me, as I'd always thought of myself as a dedicated student, and I'm finding this confusing. I was wondering if anyone has been through any similar situations or has any advice they'd like to give, I'd welcome any suggestions or comments.

Yes, this has happened to me from time to time.
Attend one class, and you'll remember why you went there in the first place.

I'd say go back for a few weeks and see what happens. You might regain that old feeling you had before you left... or you might not. But it doesn't hurt to try. If you find that aikido's not "doing it" for you any more, it's time to move on to something else. Who knows? Maybe you'll get feeling back later... in a month, in two months, in a year. Whenever.

If it helps, I've been through the same kind of situation multiple times.

I feel that I'm missing out at first. Then I get worried as I'm well out of shape and won't cope on my return session and that I've forgotten everything. And what will everyone think of me? Then decide I don't really care for the training anyway and if I'm not missing it then what's the point?

I just sit that out until that "itching to get back" sensation comes, then I know I'm ready to return!

Gives you a chance to figure out WHY you go in the first place, I guess.

If you were injured forcing you out, you may be subconsciouly avoiding a return.

Sometimes we go through phases. Depending on what reason forced you off of the mat. I find that when I feel like this I like to show up in sweats and a t-shirt and practice like I did in the beginning.

Well, it looks like everyone has similar advice and I agree with them. You are obviously a little concerned about it, or you wouldnt be here asking if it happens to all of us.

I took a break for a year before coming back into the arts. It's really not a big deal. It took me about a month to get my body to remember the movements, and I was right back where I left off.

Anyways- I hope that you at least try it out one more month at least to see if you should be there, but if not, I wish you luck in whatever you do.

If it's just the Aikido style or your dojo, I suggest finding another location to train or explore another art. Maybe you'll find enjoyment in that. Just a thought.

I agree with everyone as well. I think yuo will find that if you go back you will get into the normal routine and will think "why the hell did i ever have doubts!" lol, If you go back and you dont really like it anymore, its your desicion whether you go back again after that!

I agree with everyone else. You won't really know until you try it.

I took a break for almost two years when my first son was born. And I worked and lived within 15 minutes of the Yoshinkan Hombu dojo at the time. Going back was really difficult and I made up all sorts of excuses in my head not to go back to Aikido.

Then I went to the All Japan Yoshinkan Demonstration and remembered the reason I came to Japan in the first place.

I'm really happy that Aikido is part of my life again.
