Have you ever used your Aikido against a family member or friend? This came up in an earlier thread and I would like to hear your stories. I've used it on my older brother. We fight alot evileyes . I somehow managed to get a good nikkyo :) it worked like a charm.

Since my sons were able to walk and fall down we've played and wrestled a lot. Since kids love falling and being caught I use Aikido a lot with them while we're playing. They'll jump at me and I'll spin them around and say things like "oh...shomen irimi nage" and put them on the ground and then "oh...kotegaeshi" and put them on a ground and then...you get the idea.

Just for the record, I'm being very gentle and not trying to "make the technique work" but just give them a way to fall down onto the couch or floor or something in a fun way.

Anyway, when my oldest son was 4 years old we were doing this and I got hold of both his arms and put him in ju-jinage and went "oh...ju-jinage" and got him to fall on the floor. About a month later we were doing this again and this time *he* grabbed my arms and went "oh...ju-ji-nage" and did it right!

I looked at him in surprise/shock/trepidation for a moment and then asked if he'd been practicing on his daycare teachers and fellow daycare students. He said he hadn't been...

A fun moment...

They have asked me not too, sadly. Sadly for it takes away all of those, "Come here a sec" moments.

I feel for you. Maybe one day they'll be pulling you aside with a "come here a sec" to try something.

Here's hoping,

I think I had only been training for a week when my husband forbade me to say, "Grab my wrist" any more. Too bad for me. . .as much as I try to practice the techniques when I get home, I have a hard time picturing what my imaginary uke is doing!

Well it seems we have all done aikido stuff to our friends and family just playing around, but I took the original post to be asking if you'd ever had to use aikido to defend yourself/someone else from family or friends.

Yes.

It was Christmas time and in the white trash tradition of my family, a fight nearly broke out. My 17 yr old niece and my mother got into an argument. When they both shot up out of their chairs my sister got in front of my mom I got in front of my niece. She aimed an open palm shove/slap at my face which somehow I just turned into sankyo. I completely lost zanshin as I just stared at the technique wondering where the hell it had come from. I then realized that my niece was close to breaking her own wrist as she kept trying to come around and hit me with the other hand...and running into the sankyo. I walked her into the living room, put her on the couch and sat on her (weight underside, unliftable body :D ) until she calmed down a bit.

Another time my sisters husband had a bad reaction to his "migraine medication" (read that as beer) and he got all loopy. Three of us were trying to get him into the bed (he's a thick stocky guy). Two people had his arms supported on their shoulders but when they moved his feet just dragged and they couldn't support his weight. We started over and I would push on the balance points on the back of his hips (the ones I've seen used to move uke's hips through in irimi nage) which would cause him to take a step. We kept doing this and slowly walked him into his bedroom to sleep it off.

That's all I can think of right now.
