Just saw an excellent film The Twilight Samurai (http://www.empirepicturesusa.com/ep/show_movie.asp?title=10025&subselect=1) directed by Yoji Yamada. Yamada is best known for his Toro-san films. Like that series, this film deals in human relationships with a story line that is punctuated with two fight scenes. Even though this film has won 12 Japanese Film Academy Awards and is an Academy Award Nominee, it might be overlooked. For those who can't see it on the big screen, it is out on DVD.
For those who believe the chambara genre (samurai films) should only be judged by body count and fight scenes, you'll have to wait for the USA release of the new(?) Zatoichi film July 23, 2004. I've been told it's been out in the Asian market for two years.
I think it's playing at the theaters across the street from the dojo. A bunch of folks from the dojo saw it over the weekend and said it was a pretty good movie. Most of them seem to have liked it better than "The Last Samurai," at least.

I looked it up and rented it when William Bodiford logged onto one of the boards to recommend it. I got it from a specialty video shop with Dead Baby dolls and "Graphic Novels".
The star, Sanada Hiroyuki, is quite athletic. He made a good showing several years ago in a pathos-filled film called Sharaku which speculated on the mysterious life of an Ukiyoe artist. He's also the hardass who beats up Tom Cruise in that other samurai movie.
