Hi everyone,
Soon I'm gonna have an Ikkyu test. I already tried it some months ago but I was not ready so I didn't pass it. The sensei told me that to pass an Ikkyu test I had to know exactly the same number of thechniques as for Shodan (except, of course, that I don't need to master them as well). How many techniques does that make? I feel kinda anxious!

Lots of techniques I would imagine, depends on your organisation. Ask your sensei and good luck!

I can only speak from our organization, for 1st Kyu and Shodan you need to know 5 techniques, which actually means 7, for 7 different attacks. So is that 5 techniques or 49 techniques? Dunno. Our Shodan test is our 1st Kyu test + more. Ask your instructor or a senior student what kind of things sensei is going to be looking for. Good Luck!

You'll have to find out the specific throws for your own organization.

I'm helping someone who is preparing for his shodan, and the drill we've found useful is for uke to pick one attack and keep doing it continuously while nage cycles through as many different defenses as he can find. Nage starts out just trying to remember all those different throws, but should be working toward being able to choose fluidly among them depending on the energy of the attack.

You can also reverse this and have uke cycle through different attacks while nage does the same general defense--I trained for a little while at a dojo which really favored that approach, but I found it harder.

Good luck with your test.
