Hi Guys

I'm due to be seconded down to London for about a month possibly more, which unless i find a suitable place to train will really set my training back. therefore I'm asking if anyone knows of any Yoshinkan or Yoshinkan style dojo's in London. (the style I practice is Shudokan which is a Yoshinkan offshoot). I am quite anxious about this as I have a grading comming up quite soon.

Hi Dave!

Try using the dojo search in the menu on the left of the screen. Just search for London - it gives you a long list of dojo's out of which approx. 7 are Yoshinkan.

I'm afraid I haven't been to any of the clubs listed. I have been to a Yoshinkan dojo in Bushy (near Watford), many moons ago but I don't know if it is still running.

I think it will really boil down to where you end up staying as to what is easily commutable.

Happy to personally recommend two:

Meidokan Dojo with David Rubens. Sensei Rubens trained in Japan under Gozo Shioda Sensei for 4 years and was graded to 4th Dan by Shioda. I have only trained with David Rubens 4 or 5 times, at seminars, but I enjoyed it very much.

Also, Kenshinkai, under Sensei Terry Harrison (5th Dan), in Edgeware. I have trained with Terry Harrison many times although again only at Seminars. I like his teaching style and he has a natural ability to share his enthusiasm.

There's loads of good aikido in London. Dave Rubens is usually the Yoshinkan instructor most recommend, but while you're there why not check out the following aikikai dojo's:

University College London - Two very good aikido clubs, one headed by Kanetsuka shihan (origionally Yohinkan, now 7th dan Hombu).

SOAS Uni - Underground and cosmopolitan, cheap but classy. Also good for ballet costumes and cartoons.

North London Dojo - Two BAF 4th dans and tai chi teachers.

There's loads of Yoshinkan there! Terry Harrison Sensei is very very good. There is Tony Yates Sensei, also VVG, Dave Rubens Sensei, also VVG, etc.... It is all VVG!

If you are Shudokan, I believe there is a dojo in Hatfield (which also has Yoshinkan classes). It's not so far from London.

Tony Yates is a top man, we went to visit his dojo once just train and check him. He was really hospitable. Knows his stuff big time. :)
