By group, do you mean dojo or association? In our club/dojo we have 37 registered members (includes 14 juniors). We average about 11 per session. Our club belongs to the Lancashire Aikikai which has 9 dojo's, I have no idea of the of teh total membership.

About 15 fairly regular attendees, another 10 we see occasionally, and a fluctuating group of Intro students (5 right now) who usually don't stay.

If we get 8 people at a class it's a great turnout.

After 18 months, a regular class is 10-12. Biggest ever was 14. Had to have two rows when we lined up - that was fun!

I teach In the Nai Tei dojo and there I have about 10 –15 enthusiastic and very good students (I’m very proud of them). The average attendance is 8 –12 per class.

I train in the Aikikai de Colombia central dojo and we are about 30 – 40 people, average attendance is 10 –15, on Sundays 20 – 30.

I think we could probably only fit about ten people on the mat in our dojo. The most I've seen is... eight? at a time.

There are more students than that, but we pick what days to attend that best fit our schedule, so it's always fluctuating. A few days ago, I was observing and it was just soke and Matt-sensei for about a half-hour before two more guys showed up. *shrug*

and here I thought my classes were small...turns out they seem to be average...I go Tues nights with about 5-6 of us and Thurs nights there usually about 4 of us. And that does not include the 1-4 Senseis. Some nights we have Leon Brooks Sensei so the regular 4 Sensei become students like the rest of us. I think I would prefer the smaller classes anyway.

I think we have about 35 students enrolled. Class size averages about 10-12 students. The days we have two classes, the second class is usually around 4-5 people, while the earlier class is around 10-16.

From my travels, I'd say that most UK dojos have around 10 practicing on any night. Student clubs go up and down a lot with term times and the few permanent dojos have a little more. There is also seasonal variation at most dojos with Spring and Autumn being the busiest times.

How large would you want it? Not so big that you didn't get some 1 on 1 tuition, but not so small that there wasn't a spread of grades might be my answer.

Out of interest does anyone know what the largest UK/international dojo membership is? Not that bigger is necessarily better (insert smutty joke of choice here - ex girlfriends please don't post) .

Hello all,

I am a member of the Hakodate Dojo that has about 50 members, where anywhere from 5 to 50 will show up. The Hakodate Dojo is a member of the Hokkaido Aikikai, which includes about 8 dojos. The largest being the Hokkaido Universtiy Dojo, they have 200 or more members.

I am the only English speaker at my Dojo

In the UK the largest dojo would be the Shudokan Hombo dojo in Nottingham with around 300 students (children and Adults)

Thirteen of us in total at the moment, but of course this fluctuates --- about 7 core students and 6 who are either newbies, infrequent, or on a hiatus due to health issues.

Actually, I had a bit of a chuckle over this since you could definitely say that when it comes to Aikido itself being reliant less on strength and more on blending, etc. that:

At my dojo we have 15 adult classes per week.
The attendance is usually between 12 - 24 students per class. Sometimes more, sometimes less.
I don't know how many total students there are but I think there are between 200 - 300 dues paying members.

I would say my dojo has about 12-15 people signed up. Out of those, probably only about 5 are really serious about Aikido(including myself) and come often. An average class size is about 4 people. In fact a few times I've gotten to work with my instructor one on one. Can't complain about that! :)
