In my dojo, we change training partners with each new technique. I like this approach, but I am told that in many dojos one works with a single partner for the entire training session.

Which do you prefer, and why?

I prefer the multiple partner approach. If you train with one partner constantly, each learns the others movements and in the spirit of harmony, there is the chance of practice becoming a dance. Also, each person is different is size weight speed and firmness of attack. Also each person performs nage's actions differently. To me, Aikido is the practice of movement and control under varied situations. It would seem to me that this is more difficult to acheive when practicing with the same partner.

I love changing partners. It's humbling (is that a word?).

Sometimes I'll stay together with the same partner for 3 or 4 techniques then split up again. Especially when Sensei strings techniques together.

I prefer the multiple partner approach.

Just make sure you use protection. :)

I like training with different partners because you get a different feel for each one. Teaches you to adapt the technique.
