I already posted this on aikidojournal, but this forum is more active so I thought I'd add it here as well.

I found out this week that Claude Berthiaume, chief instructor of Aikido de la Montagne in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, has been promoted by the Aikikai to the rank of 7th dan and given the title of Shihan.
I send my congradulations to Claude and to all his students.

P.S. Does anybody know if anyone else has been promoted to Shihan this year?

Good question. It was last year that the first foreign shihan were designated, wasn't it? Nadeau, Doran, Witt(?), Konigsberg, Tissier, et al...

This year only one?

I think it was two years ago. This is the list from that year :

Frank DORAN (7th Dan, California Aikido Association, U.S.A.)

Robert NADEAU (7th Dan, California Aikido Association, U.S.A.)

William WITT (7th Dan, Takemusu Aikido Association, U.S.A.)

Christian TISSIER (7th Dan, FFAAA, France)

Paul C. N. LEE (7th Dan, Republic of China Aikido Association)

Kenneth E. COTTIER (6th Dan, British Aikido Federation)

Jan HERMANSSON (6th Dan, Swedish Budo Federation - Aikido Section).

As far as I know nobody was promoted shihan last year. As far as Koenigsburg sensei, he received his 7th dan, but as far as I know has not been issued a shihan certificate. Of course, my knowledge could be old news by now.
