A quick dojo search showed me plenty of dojos in Chicago, where I'll be next month for a conference. But I have no idea which ones, if any, are near the hotel where I'm staying, since I won't have a rental car.
Does anyone know which dojos might be close enough for a bus or cab ride from The Millenium Knickerbocker Hotel at 163 E. Walton Pl. ?
Thanks in advance for any info... .

Jon,
You should definitely check out Choate Sensei.

I have taken the subway from the Knickerbocker many times to get to the dojo. I am not sure what a cab would cost. I think the dojo is in Irving park.
Jon:
I don't believe there are any aikido dojo in the downtown area, which is where your hotel is. There are a significant number of dojo on the north side of the city and relatively close to downtown. A 10-15 minute cab ride can get you to any number of them. Additionally, Chicago's subway system, called the "El," is pretty easy to navigate and get you into the neighborhoods where dojo are located (it also only costs $1.50). You are very welcome to visit the Midwest Aikido Center when you come to town. To get there, you can take the subway's "Brown line" north to the Montrose stop. Take a right out of the station and walk west a couple blocks to Damen Ave. Take a left at Damen, and the M.A.C. is one door south of the intersection. The address is:
Midwest Aikido Center
4349 N. Damen Ave.

Regards,
Kevin Choate Sensei's dojo, the Chicago Aikikai, is actually in the Roscoe Village neighborhood.
The Midwest Aikido Center is in the Ravenswood neighborhood.
A cab to either would probably run you between $15 and $20.

Jon,
You are also welcome at:
Japanese Culture Center
Tenshinkan Dojo
1016 W. Belmont Avenue
Chicago, IL 60657

Andy Sato Sensei is the Chief Instructor.
Directions: take the Red line northbound to Belmont, exit station and go left heading directly west about one block. We are on the right side of the street, next to Subway.
My guess is that the Red line station at Chicago and State is easiest to get to, but confirm with your hotel.
Hope to see you,
Leslie Parks-Casey

Wow, Thanks for all the info guys.
I'll visit all the websites to check out the schedules and see what might work for me, around the conference schedule!
Hope to see some of you there!

Chicago Ki Society is also reachable by the L or train line.

Jon Eley Sensei's Aikido roots go back to the 60's and has seen a couple of much more famous Japanese instructors come and go from the Chicago scene and he is definitely worth a visit.
A small dojo hides an excellent resource of decades of quality experience...
A good example of how powerful Ki-Aikido can be from someone with a deep understanding of the martial side of aikido.
highly recommended.
