I'm starting to prepare for my shodan test (have about one year to go) and was wondering if anyone had recommendations on some good eating habits (what to eat or even best times to eat) in order to improve my energy and stamina. Thanks a lot.
If you want quality answers you'll have to supply more information. Such as:
What is your current diet like? List what food, quantity and times you eat.
What is your current level of fitness? For example, do you run? If so, how often, how far and how fast?
What are the expectations for your shodan test? Will you be on the mat for 5 minutes or 2 hours? What types of activites will you be expected to perform?

Well, I'm in pretty good shape right now. 155 lbs, eat 3-4 times a day, (light brekafast of just some fruit and maybe a muffin, major meal around late afternoon before training, then lots of fruit at night and possibly some sort of healthy dips with some crackers). Used to eat tons of red meat but now trying to cut back and focus on healthier foods. the test itself is likely to only be about 15-25 minutes. don't run a whole lot, but train every day for at least 2 hours. the test will probably consist of some suwari waza (ikkyo through gokyo), about 10 minutes of various hand techniques standing, ken and/or jo work, and then randori at the end. any thoughts? Thanks!

Gotta go with Mark on this one. With the subsitution of Ben & Jerry's Wavy Gravy ice cream. They've stopped making it and since then I haven't tested ;)
p.s. A YEAR!! Man, I had just under two weeks to prepare for mine. Not enough time to learn anything just enough time to worry :p

My dad used to do triathalons a lot and the whole family would carbo-load (pasta mostly with us) with him for the week before each race. We couldn't stand to eat spaghetti for a few months after each pme. Though a triathalon is more of an entire day's committment, maybe some carbo-loading for the last couple days before your test might give you the energy to help you get through that intense half hour. P.S. I know carbs aren't the "in" health food now, but you sound like a healthy guy who's not necessarily trying to lose weight, and just a couple days of pasta won't ruin your metabolism and/or body-image ;).
Given your description of the test, I suspect it's stop and go for the techniques. What I mean is you get a brief stop when a new uke comes in, or a new technique or portion of the test is announced. Sound about right?
I'd suggest Taku's interval training (http://www.trainforstrength.com/Endurance1.shtml) to help with the aerobic/anaerobic pathways.
