while poking around online looking for a men's kimono, I found some kimono-looking items called yukatas. One site said they were worn in the summer. Another said they were worn as bathrobes. Yet another said they were worn only by men. Could someone please tell me the proper use of the yukata so I can decide whether to get one or not?

Generally speaking, kimonos are for formal wear whereas yukatas are casual wear. Kimonos are silk; yukatas are cotton.

Yukatas for women look the same as a kimono; for men, it sort of looks like a gi top with knee length pants.

In Japan, people usually wear yukatas during the summer (to see the fireworks in July & August).

I saw people wear yukatas around the house and even outside.
