I have been making my own weapons recently since I have found it to be more economical, however time consuming. Either way I like doing it since it gives my weapons charactor.

Anyways today a good friend of mine informed me that he was ordering a new wooden tanto.

I told him not too and said I would make him one. Anyways I was going to just make a regular plain tanto. But then I thought about it and I decided I want to make sure this tanto is special and unique, after all this is for my best friend.

Does anyone have any suggestions on a way to make it unique and escape from the plain design?

Does anyone have any interesting wooden tantos out there that they wish to show off? Or links?

I have looked on the internet and can not seem to find anything either then the basic plain tanto everyone has.

check out www.bujindesign.com. The hardwood tanto they sell has a different look. Not sure what the history is of that design, but it is different.

Some nice wood carving and detail sounds spiffy. Not sure if you have a wood burner or not but you could print out patterns and burn them into the tanto.

My suggestion would be to look at diffrent knives and swords and get some ideas on what the guilder did to add character.

I do not have a wood burner kit, but I do have a sodering Iron. I was thinking of possibly engraving something into the handle.

Exotic hardwoods are always nice. I have an ebony tanto from Artha Gallery (http://arthagallery.com/index.shtml) that is really nice looking (feels good too).

I thought about making a stiletto style after a discusion we had in class about how to take a double bladed knife and not cut your hand

I have a wood burner (like a pen; $25 at a cheap craft store) and I bet a soldering iron would work fine. I drew a dragon curled round the stick, burned it in, sanded with really fine grain paper, and rubbed in tung oil. Looks great, and stands up to moderate pounding.

Yeah, you can get those wood burning irons at any craft store for cheap. They also have different tips you can buy too.

I was thinking about making my own wooden tantos as well. I had the Idea of carving it myself, sanding smooth, and staining it a really nice color. maybe give it a polyurethane finish.

I also had the idea of Tsukamaki (sword wrapping) for the handle part. A nice brown Tsukaito wrapping would be very attractive with the wood. Simple but very elegant.

You can learn Tsukamaki on the internet, and it's a lot easier than i thought it would be. Good luck.

I never got that fancy with mine. I just used the end of a boken that snapped in half. Cut off the splintered parts, restained it and there you have it - a Tanto
