I would like to offer my sensei and dojo the gift of a banner with the ai ki and do characters (kanji?). These would be arrayed in the traditional horizontal, descending format and preferrably on some kind of material that could be rolled up and stored when not on display. The scale of the banner would be large enough to read with perhaps the characters a foot or so in size.
Can anyone help me locate either a ready made version of this or an artist/calligrapher able to prepare one for me?
Thank you so much.
I would prefer the artist to be in the United States to simplify matters and avoid overseas shipping, but if not possible, then so be it.
You can try contacting Eri Takase at <http://www.takase.com/>. You can see samples of her work on her site as well as in the AikiCards (http://www.aikiweb.com/aikicards/takase.html) electronic greeting cards section on this site.

I think what you are looking for is called a kakejiku or kakemono, maybe that will help in your search.

You could go to a reprographic output shop, they can scan the kanji and print it on canvas with a large format printer. The technology on these printers is very good, and a black ink print would be very archival (permanent) Not sure about the copyright issues of scanning kanji though, the shop might be hesitant. You could bring a disk with the scan, then they wouldn't care more than likely. You'll have to call around to find a shop with the right printer and materials. Not as cool as real brushwork but one way to go.
