~~I'm sorry, but I don't 'get' irimi nage. We practice it a lot, and I like it as an ukemi and movement principle drill, but as an effective counter to a real attack..? Clothesline someone, sure, or get completely behind them and dump them straight back or choke them...but this big sweeping movement leaves too many openings in my view, at least from what I've felt from most of my nages.
~~What am I missing? How do you all feel about it? Thanks!

My interpretation is that the get-behind-drop-uke-straight-back throw is of course desirable in a lot of ways, but a good uke (a skilled attacker) who doesn't want to meet mr. floor almost never lets you do that. As you irimi, they turn their attention toward you to continue the attack, and then ... well I really feel that an agressive uke really just begs you to do the traditional iriminage, and I believe that kind of sincere attack is why we have iriminage as we know it.
Of course if they just stand their and ignore you after the initial attack, I agree that going through with this technique feels really contrived. Ukemi like that squeezes all the joy and value out of aikido.

It's called the "20 year throw" for a reason Paula.
Keep at it and it will avail itself to you.
