Right on the heels of Peter Goldsbury's article (http://www.aikiweb.com/language/goldsbury1.html) is another article on the Japanese terms of "sensei" and "shihan" by Jim Vance entitled, "Learning from the Learned: A Story in Pictures." (http://www.aikiweb.com/language/vance1.html) The article contemplates the differences between instruction and teaching, education and apprenticeship, and the Japanese terms "sensei" and "shihan" (including the derivation of the modern day kanji characters for those two terms from their respective Chinese pictographs). Yet another insightful article on these elusive terms!

With the proper mindset, wisdom is gained in due season.

There's a time to study, and a time to clear one's mind.

There's a time to teach, and a time to refrain from teaching.

No amount of words will help a teacher to truly know about proper time and place. Mindful awareness and experience are the true teachers.
