Just wanted to say 'hi' (evidently ;p) and introduce myself and all.

I'm new to aikido and martial arts; I've only done.. what, all of 5 lessons so far, Aikido Takemusu in Australia. I've loved every bit of those lessons, though, hence my going around on the internet to find out more about aikido, which is how I found this place ;).

On the note of other hobbes/interests (forgot to include that in the first post, and thought I may as well put this in ;p) I've done 'classical' or 'western' fencing before, if only for a month or two. Only stopped due to the problems involved in getting there, though - I really enjoyed it. Probably due to my advantage being a left hander ;p. I also play squash in a local league.

Hello Christian,

welcom on the Aikiweb.

I also fenced before I started other martial arts. Somethings I learned with fencing are very usefull in (weapons)training. In my club people sometimes complain I always have the tip of my bokken pointed at them :D :eek:

I hope you enjoy it. BTW, being lefthanded is not a advantage in aikido, only coming to the dojo reguraly is.

I fenced (and still do) for about three years, practicing the two arts has really helped me to progress faster through the basics. Train hard and have fun!

Hah, I also fenced before aikido. it makes the intepretation of aiki-ken kata to empty hand techniques very logical.

Where in Oz? Melbourne or Sydney? I used to train in Sydney.

Melbourne ;). It was a pretty small group, not an official fencing organisation or anything. I wasn't terribly good at it, but I enjoyed it. Very easy to simply set up a bout with another person in the hall who wasn't occupied and just go at it.

Very interesting to see how many other fencers there are invoved in Aikido as well.........I am a long time fencer- foil, epee' and came to this art after long searching for the same.

certainly helps with the sense of distance doesn't it?

I'm another one. Started with tai chi, moved to western fencing, aikido, rennaisance period fencing (multiple weapons/hands and done "in the round" instead of on a strip), and then to european armored/armed combat. Funny thing is aikdo is the only one I've stuck with.
