Passed my 6th Kyu grade at the weekend with very good marks, still quite jelous of my friend who jumped straight to 5th as they thought he was good enough (which he is and knows it) the gradings were held at a seminar which was excellent, learned lots of really nice and painfull techniques.
Gotta say tho our schools black belts are real sadists. they dont half like to whack a technique on, especialy if it causes pain.

What's with the '6th kyu' anyway? I thought that was a made-up rank for children's classes. In the schools I've encountered, the ranks start at 5th kyu, and passing that test is a fairly automatic consequence of just showing up for a while. I certainly wouldn't put myself out envying someone that rank. Does the organization have other ranks below 6th kyu as well? I've never heard of this.

Got to remember that different styles start at different levels and have different grading system.

Yoshinkan starts at 10th kyu.Which comes the question, what style are you practicing Lovatt-san?

The first one always feels great because its a completely new experience. I still remember mine and getting through it by knowing that the one beggining with 'U' meant i had to roll backwards :p

it sounds like your association grades similar to ours. We start at red belt (7th kyu/ungraded) and grade to white belt after completing a novice course. it is also possible to grade all the way to yellow belt (5th kyu) if you are flawless on both.

Erm yes it was my first grading! and i loved it, though i'm still suffereing from the seminar.

Actualy your grading system is the same as ours we are Seishin Kai

you start on:

Red - Ungraded

White - 6th kyu

yellow - 5th kyu

orange - 4th

green - 3rd

blue - 2nd

brown - 1st -also receive Hakama.

black - self explanitory.

there were some exceptional students there, my friend pete jumped straight to 5th he impressed the judges and one yellow belt impressed them so much after he'd made 4th they called him out at the end and gave him 3rd (green)

It had to be said he was VERY good, i trained with him at the seminar and i couldnt fault any of his technique it was smooth and he really didnt use any strength.

Anyhoo thank you to all who congratulated me, here i go for 5th gotta practice my applications a little more too.

That's an interesting way of grading...first off, the red belt is usually reserved for ultra ultra high dans...doshu and the such; and in a lot of dojos, the tests are based not only on a student's overall understanding of Aikido, but of specific techniques, and each test adds something new to the list. So a person testing for 5th kyu will only do about half of what a person testing for 3rd kyu is responsible for knowing...

I once heard that absolute beginners in Judo wear a red belt -- its a warning that they are dangerous! :D

My dojo uses a colored belt system (I know you hate the convention, Aarron) and Red is the first belt in the advanced ranks. We go like this:



White (you get this for walking through the door)

Yellow (Beginner)

Orange (Beginner)

Green (Intermediate)

Purple (Intermediate)

Red (Advanced)

Blue 5th kyu (Advanced)

Blue 4th kyu (Advanced)

Blue 3rd kyu(Advanced)

Brown 2nd kyu (Expert)

Brown 1st kyu (Expert)

Black Shodan (Lit. "Beginner's Rank")

Black Nidan, Sandan, Yondan, Godan....



I know this isnt' anywhere near the norm in the greater Aikido world, but it seems to work well at our dojo.
