So, I joined this site years.. almost 10 ago, and unfortunately I was taken out of my Aikido training very quickly because of some major non-Aikido health related issues.
In that 10 years, the itch of Aikido never went away. So, I started looking at dojo's a few weeks ago and found one that has all the feeling of Aikido that I was searching for, however..
First night of class, during Ukemi Waza, my little toe decided not to follow and I've either fractured or broken it. Is this a common injury? It is on my weaker side. I am following RICE, and it's buddy taped. I don't plan on returning to class until next week to allow it a few days to reduce the swelling and risk further injury.
I am thinking of taping my little toes in until I've gotten more comfortable with all the Ukemi's to avoid any other future injuries to them.
Looking for any and all input/advice on prevent injuries like this?

It's not unheard of. I've seen it happen twice (both times were dislocations). One was from catching a toe in a gap between mats, and one was from a weird landing. I think you are doing all the right things, and I can't think of anything else to add, apart from see a doctor about it if you are able.

Maybe rest more and do some basic footwork at home until you can tenkan, etc, smoothly without pain.
Even something as small as this can become chronic and give you serious problems into the future. Treat it appropriately, don't resume training until it makes sense to do so, protect it with buddy taping AND with good technique, and be mindful of it always. Also, when buddy taping, put a small bit of gauze or cotton ball between the toes - helps absorb moisture and keep the skin from breaking down and getting funky.

Broken little toe often kicking in the bashing arts before Aikido ...
Toe lags sometimes ...
Always carry tape to sympathy/support tape it to the other ones ...

Happened to me at a seminar a few years ago. I just buddy taped the toe and more or less continued on with life. I had to adjust some of my movement or just not take fast ukemi off of that side for a few weeks. It was pretty much back to 100% in about 8 weeks. Arnica gel helped a lot with the swelling and bruising.
Had the same thing about a month ago, different toe though (tatami gap issue as mentioned earlier), I taped mine for 2 weeks and avoided suwari waza, went light on the ukemi and sitting seiza. Going to the doctor might be good, but ultimately they will likely tell you much of the above regardless of what type of injury - rest it, tape it, use a cold compress and be careful. It still gives me problems sometimes if my footwork is poor, but mostly it recovered just fine. The advice above is solid - practice footwork carefully and slowly at home, take ukemi slow, if you go back to training before it is fully healed make sure your partners and sensei are aware of the injury, avoid suwari waza and seiza.
