Hi everybody. I am new to the forum having joined to educate myself as my teenage son has recently started practising aikido. He has only attended a handful of training sessions to date and as yet does not have a gi or any other equipment. I'm pretty sure that this is going to be something he is going to decide is definitely for him and stick with, but at the same time I am reluctant to buy brand new equipment for him at this early stage. I've been scratching about on the internet and found quite a range of used equipment for sale online. So I was just wondering what the general consensus was on kitting newbies out with used and second hand equipment. Is it common practise within the sport? Or is there any particular reason that it is frowned upon or avoided? A bit of a vague question I am afraid but hopefully somebody can give me some insight. Thanks in advance.

Dear Mr. Carrol,

There is hardly a consensus about used equipment for anyone. Students often give used dogi or other equipment to their friends after gaining or losing weight or something. Not uncommon at all. I don't know what equipment you are referring to though. If you are thinking of buying weapons for your son, I would suggest discussing it with his teacher. His sensei will guide you through the process and help you ensure you get the right items.

Thanks for the advice Mr Hacket. Much appreciated.

Hello Eamon,

It depends on the dojo, but in most cases the only equipment a beginner needs is a gi, and in some dojos it's acceptable to train in sweats for a little while at least. The dojo where I train often has some very lightly used gis for sale at a reduced rate. The only other "equipment" is weapons, and there it depends on the dojo: not all dojos have beginners train with weapons, and many that do also have weapons that can be borrowed for use while you're in the dojo. I'd say it's probably unusual for a beginner to need to buy their own weapons right away.
