The Aikikai Hombu Dojo has announced its 2016 Kagami Biraki promotions list (http://www.aikikai.or.jp/pdf/suisen/h28.pdf). The recipients for 8th dan this year are Jiro Kimura, Tsuruzo Miyamoto, and Christian Tissier. Congratulations to everyone on the list!

Interesting and I guess congrats are in order.

The list itself is interesting. One would think that as you go down the ranks the numbers would increase but there are only a few shodan and nidans.

Not at all. These are promotions by recommendation, not promotions by testing. The vast majority of low dan rankings obtain their ranks through testing. It is very rare to achieve such a low rank by recommendation.

Also, congratulations to Taketoshi Kawamoto for his 5th dan. I trained with him for several years and he is incredible. His ukemi in particular is among the best I've seen.
