A friend asked me to research and write about the concept of heijoshin 平常心. It took a little longer than I had expected, but this blog is the result.

Heijoshin is literally "normal mind" but it doesn't seem very normal to me. What do you think?

Interesting read. Thanx.

Normal is a relative concept. Perhaps what is meant is that in combat this state of mind is normal. Be emotionally detached from what is going on, be observant and act accordingly. There is no time to think, to contemplate, one barely has time to act.
Like your kata example where during the steps you get hit; you would ignore it and continue for the sake of the kata. In actual combat you would not stop either, now would you?

In daily life, quite the opposite state of mind is required: be compassionate and emotionally attached. This is part of being human.

So perhaps when you find yourself in combat, it is time to be less human, more animalistic (at least in mind set)
