Hey everyone. Been lurking around here for a while, decided I would post and introduce myself.

I'm Mark, brand new in Aikido, 7th kyu, my first martial art (besides some pay-to-rank tkd as a kid for a couple months).

I started Aikido a few months ago mostly for exercise and motivation, and for something to pour my focus into. I've also always had a hard time sticking to things for very long so I figured I would try to work on that as well with this. Not sure how deep into the realm of self defense I want to take it, or if I want to get into sparing or other arts or fighting sports, but I admit since I started I've gotten a whole new (and more realistic) perspective on the various martial arts and styles, as well as a new passion for them.

What I'm currently focusing on in my training, besides the basics of the basics, is mindfulness/alertness. Essentially taking the kata more seriously rather than trying to mentally piece together the proper choreography. Focusing on proper technique so much that I accidentally stand in a ridiculously exposed position is bad enough, but doing so because I'm not paying attention or not taking the training more seriously is something I'm really trying to avoid and learn from. Luckily my instructors have a good eye for detail and seem to be consistently pointing such things out.

I appreciate the wisdom and differing perspectives many of you have offered me here. Even at my basic level of training I believe reading these forums and columns has helped me train better, and start to find my own Aikido.
