Mr. Pincus helped start the film school at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the ’70s and taught at Harvard into the early ’80s. By then he was commuting from Vermont, where he had moved in part because of threats made to his family by a mentally unstable man he had known while filming in the South in the ’60s.

Mr. Pincus left filmmaking entirely in the ’80s and spent much of the next 30 years running a successful flower farm in Vermont. He also became a black-belt instructor of the Japanese martial art aikido.

It has been many years since I last saw Ed Pincus yet I am still sad to hear of his passing. I offer my condolences to his son Ben and his family.

I don't know Ed Pincus but I just happened to be thinking of his family yesterday because of the "Aikido Daycare" video someone posted in the General section. I have a clear memory of Ben Pincus' oldest boy playing just about exactly like that with his dad and other adult dojo members at a seminar a couple of years ago when he must have been about two or three. They were all having so much fun and it was really nice to watch.

I didn't know Ed Pincus sensei personally. I've found out about him a while ago while looking for students of the late Terry Dobson sensei. If I remember correctly in the Aikido of Champlain Valley web site there were some stories of his or maybe his son's experience with Terry Dobson as a teacher.

It is very sad that not only we are at the end of the era of the direct students of the founder, but also in an era that the group of the 3rd generation students is dwindling.
