From Stan's interviews
Imperial Demonstration Ueshiba Sensei gave a special demonstration at the Saineikan Dojo in the Imperial palace grounds about 1941. Did this occur as a result of his connection with Admiral Isamu Takeshita? Yes. When Takeshita Sensei was a Grand Chamberlain he was told by the Emperor to arrange for aikido to be shown to him, so he went to the Ueshiba dojo. Ueshiba Sensei answered, "I can't show false techniques to the Emperor. Basically in aikido, the opponent is killed with a single blow. It's false if the attacker is thrown, leisurely stands up, and attacks again. [On the other hand], I can't go around killing my students." He refused the invitation in this way, but when Takeshita Sensei told this to the Emperor, he said, "I don't care if it's a lie. Show me the lie!" Tsutomu Yukawa and I took ukemi ;)

Interesting side note, he was calling it "Tenshin ryu Aikibujutsu" then. Maybe only for this demo?

Already invited to give a demo to the emperor? Make sure to mention how you have to downgrade all your waza so you don't murder your students. The old man certainly was an expert at self promotion.

This said by a guy who never killed anybody barehanded.

How can you be sure?

How can you be sure?
Until evidence is produced, it didn't happen.

What does killing someone with their bare hands have to do anything with it? Everything goes back to sword and spear.
I've never come across anyone walking down the street with a real spear in hand, full-on razor-sharp tip and all.
Or, even a sharp-edged sword.
Lots of people with hands to grab, or which can turn into fists.
Don't know what that has to do with anything, except the departure into historical corrections was slightly annoying.

I bet you haven't been asked to demonstrate a martial art in front of the Emperor either.

Actually, the emperor wasn't there, although the demonstration was held on the grounds of the imperial palace. I think that three of the emperor's younger brothers were there (IIRC...).
Best,
Chris

Every time I think I can no longer be amazed at the internet population's ability to focus on irrelevant details....

You mean, like bringing sword and spear into a conversation about hitting in an empty hand demonstration? :D
Anyway, it was just information, ignore it if you're not interested.
Best,
Chris

Nope, can't say that I have. Can't say that I'm overly concerned about doing so, either.
I forgot to put into the last post, , "Every time I think I can no longer be amazed at the internet population's ability to focus on irrelevant details...."
Pot, meet Kettle.
