What a nightmare. We're all numb here. My brother was less than a half-mile from the blast, working as a Red Cross volunteer at the first aid station @ Kenmore Square. He said that some of the injured runners came back there from Copley for treatment of their wounds.

I was in downtown Boston on Sunday, training with friends and chatting with people who had traveled to Boston from all over the world to run in the marathon on Monday. The subways were packed with happy marathoners and their families, and the mood was like a carnival. Runners from Nevada, runners from England... a few even recognized each other from other marathons they had run elsewhere in the world. They called out to each other across the train cars like long-lost relatives.

The contrast between Sunday and Monday was like heaven and hell. My thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families, and all who were caught up in this horrific and tragic event.

We were all shocked to hear of this at our rowing practice yesterday. Many members of a running club are in my training group. Thoughts are with you Mary.

A lot of people were at the race. It's a Boston/Massachusetts holiday: not everybody gets the day off, but many do, and of those that don't, many have a kid or a spouse who has the day off, so they take it too. And a lot go to see the Marathon, some to see the front-runners, but many more because they have a friend or family member who's running. It's so common here to know someone who's running, and those people are the ones who really want to be at the finish line.

All my coworkers are ok, I've heard from all my close friends. I just heard about two friends of a friend. "[name omitted] died. [name omitted] had her eardrum blown out and will likely lose her leg."

It's always easier to break than it is to make, easier to wreck than it is to mend. The only solution to hate and destruction is to join the ranks of the makers and menders and healers. One wrecker can undo the work of ten makers. So let's be a hundred makers, a thousand, whatever it takes. Let's heal the wounded, let's stay with them and help them with everything that's going to be so hard now. Let's build again -- the damaged buildings, but most importantly, the damaged human community. Let's gather, let's walk our streets, smile at each other and speak to the stranger. Build, make, mend, heal, be a part of creation.

Dear Mary,
I for one cannot understand why any person would want to detonate bombs killing and injuring civilians.This type of incident is shocking whether it takes place in the U.S.A or in all the trouble spots throughout the world.Mans apparent inhumanity to man causes pain and tears.
Hope they catch these misguided people who did this act.at least in the U.S.A you give the people who conduct such crimes a long holiday in the pen.So sad for the victims and families.
In the U.K thanks to some misguided Judges and Human Rights the Brits would probably end up being sued by the bombers and the tax payer would foot the legal bill. joe.
