however, you might want to check with a chiropractor to see if you have a back problem which might cause your shoulder to be tight (happened to me).

also a chin-up bar where you just hang like a monkey

Ask someone to do the kneeling nikyo pin to you really slowly. When you slap, ask nage to
1.let up, but keep your arm pinned to his/her chest and
2. turn back toward your center slowly, then
3. reapply the pin, again slowly,
4. again turn back toward your center,
5.reapply the pin again, slowly.
6. turn back toward your center again. At the end of this health technique,
7. ask nage to breathe with you and as you exhale,
8. press down on your back to help you expel more air than usual.

Shoulders and other joints are always tight for a reason. After too many years of tightness and/or pain a fellow aikidoka referred me to www.egoscue.com. You can either find a consultant near you or buy Pete Egoscue's book Pain Free to start working through the issues that cause the shoulder tightness and start getting relief.

It has transformed my life and is what will allow me to continue training hard well into my sixties. I think it's very complementary to aikido.

The only drawback to egoscue's system it is it does take time. I try to do aikido every other day and my egoscue menu on the off days.

Or during regular pins like nikyo omote, sankyo, etc have someone nice who goes slow and then lets you breathe, relax and really go deep into the pin. Mostly held tension prevents range of motion so getting slow and relaxed helps a bit.
