At age 98, still teaching in her San Francisco school, the oldest surviving student of Jigoro Kano was finally awarded the rank that her three male peers were awarded some years ago: 10th dan, the highest rank in Judo. Link to movie being made about her here (http://www.flyingcarp.net/).
She was a friend and mentor to my aikido teacher, the late Gayle Fillman. I'm sorry she didn't live to see this!

That is very impressive! She must have unusually strong character.

I wonder whether the Kodokan will also promote Ms. Fukuda to 10th dan (her promotion was by the Olympics-focused USA Judo, and acknowledged by the U.S. Judo Federation). It would be high time for them to include a woman in their top rank, particularly one who was a direct student of Jigoro Kano and who has devoted her entire life to perpetuating the art of judo in its traditional form.
For her male peers to have been awarded the Kodokan rank years ago, but not she, seems like a glaring omission, though perhaps it is as much because she left Japan for the U.S. as due to gender.
All the same, her promotion by a major judo organization outside of Japan is a happy event, and the most important thing is that it has given Ms. Fukuda the joy and honor she deserves.
