So I think it would be really great if we could plan a little Aikiweb meet up here in California. Many Aikiweb members are from around here, and it would be great to put some face's to your posts.

I would suggest we meet late summer, early fall (lot's of time to hash out the details). I can think of at least one dojo we could use, here in the central valley, it's large and could hold many students.

Anyone else interested in such a thing?

Well a few years ago we did a mini Aikido L seminar at the dojo I train at, Aikido Of Diablo Valley in Concord, Calif. It's reasonably centrally located for the Bay area. Again depending on timing, date and my Sensei's agreement we could use ADV.

Do think a mini California met up is a very good idea:cool:

I am tempted to come just to get some sunshine on these old bones, no sun here for the last six months.:yuck:

I'm in! It's been to many years since the aikido-l seminars.
August will not be good for me. September or early October would be lovely.
Being probably the northernmost person, for me getting to ADV would be easiest...The Valley trickier, but if it means that more SoCal folks might attend, what the heck.
Henry, come on over!

Haha! You'd be in heaven right now, it's so nice and sunny out!

I'm up to do it wherever. I'd like to see how many are interested in coming, and then we could figure out where to hold it. I can get the Dojo here for no cost and I can guarantee the space. But anywhere in California would be fine with me.

I would suggest we use the 10-12 (lunch 12:01-1:59) 2-4 schedule. Depending on how many would be interested in teaching a small class, we could switch teachers regularly, cover a lot of material and have some real fun!

Hi Chris et al, I am in! Details might involve time conflict, and have killed my availability before, but I am at least ready to mark off a calendar date and do what I can to make it happen.

ChrisHein

I don't know why we shouldn't be able to get quite a few people. I'd be willing to hold the get together for free. We can decide who want's to teach a bit, and get to know more about each other.

I'm very interested in August-Sept as a time frame.
Thanks for the bump Janet!

If September works better for people, that sounds good to me. Saturday September 3 is labor day weekend. If that helps people with the travel that would work for me. If people wanted to come Friday evening, they could stay at the dojo free of charge. I would also be open to having the meetup on Sunday if that works out better for people.

I would be okay with training at David's place, if a more southern local works out for people.

I could make an online signup sheet, or is there something we could use for that purpose here on Aikiweb?

Michael Hackett

I'm for Fresno, but Santa Barbara is hard to pass up - home of the Palace Cafe and the best cajun food on the West Coast.

Janet Rosen
04-05-2011, 09:41 PM
hmmm.... Fresno 294 miles....Santa Barbara 448 miles.... I love the idea of a road trip down 101 all the way! but really hope for the shorter trip. With 600 mile round trip to the Valley and home, I'd be in no rush to dash out right after training so looking at 2 or 3 nights lodging for this old bag o' bones assuming other folks might also stick around a second day.

If a formal registration is needed - which may not be; we could just keep it in this thread - we could look at a free third party site like http://www.eventsbot.com/features.aspx

Having helped organize three of the aikido-l seminars, including being one of the leads on the Palo Alto one, I'd be happy to support any logistical questions that arise.

It's a cost vs. local vs. attendance problem

Aikido Of Diablo Valley in Concord has been brought up, and it's more Northern

Aikido of Fresno which is Central

Senshin center which is Southern

We need to get a rough idea of how many people would like to attend and geographically what school best works out. Right now it sounds like a northern local might work best. What is the cost of using Aikido Of Diablo Valley in Concord?

Michael Hackett

04-06-2011, 12:58 PM
Well for ADV, I haven't checked with Rick Sensei yet but once I have an idea of the date I can get a confirmation from him and I am sure he will give it. There would be no cost to use the dojo.

Will Concord be too far for the SoCal folks?

Michael Hackett
04-06-2011, 03:35 PM
Concord isn't necessarily a matter of far for me. I travel there quite frequently in fact. Concord is sort of "out of the way" and an pretty expensive place to stay generally. That isn't an issue for me as I have family in Clayton and I would be shot if I didn't stay with them when in the area. I do know a great BBQ joint there though......

Janet Rosen
04-22-2011, 06:33 PM
Wondering if there are other No or So Cal folks who haven't weighed in yet but for whom location (Concord vs Fresno vs Sta Barbara) would be a or THE major deciding factor on being able to attend/participate in a one or one and a half day informal event?

Janet Rosen
04-23-2011, 05:43 PM
So: are there SoCal folks for whom Concord is too far north to be tenable?
Is Labor Day weekend good by virtue of being a 3 day weekend OR is it lousy because of family obligations?
If Labor Day is lousy for a lot of folks, how are the wkends Of Sept 10 or 17 for folks?
Figuring there are folks offline w/ this wkend being a holiday, I'll rebump as needed ....

ChrisHein
04-23-2011, 08:05 PM
Labor day weekend sounds best to me. Let's do a quick check-in and see who might be coming.

If you're reading this thread, and want to come give a:
"yes" And say either: "North" "Central" or "South"

In a week or so we should have a good idea of how many people will come and where the majority of them are coming from. I'd be okay with Concord. If there are more Norcal people coming that would be a better choice.

So for me:

Yes; Central

Michael Hackett
04-23-2011, 08:08 PM
I'm in for Labor Day, and Concord is all right.

Janet Rosen
04-23-2011, 08:42 PM

3rd, Sunday the 4th and Monday the 5th or Just Monday?

Note that since no cost I will invite any of or ADV students that want to attend.

Bruce, is Aman Dhillon training with you at ADV? If so, tell him that it's a command performance!

Janet Rosen
05-09-2011, 05:59 PM
I think we should let folks have Monday for travelling - How do folks feel about Saturday afternoon and Sunday? or are y'all thinking just one day - in which case Sunday allows travel days each side....

BWells
05-09-2011, 10:18 PM
How every you guys want for days is fine by me.

Hum Aman Dhillon, we have an Aman not sure of last name. He is a beginner and started about 1 1/2 months ago. Have not seen him in training for about 3 weeks, so not sure if he will continue.

Thanks

Bruce, wrong one. Mine is a shodan. I thought he was training with you guys since he and his lady moved up there. Thanks anyway.

ChrisHein
05-10-2011, 12:09 AM
I was personally thinking about one day, and that is what would be easiest for me to plan. Saturday would be my pick, that gives people travel time on Sunday, and still one day to rest up at home on Monday.

05-19-2011, 12:57 PM
So I assume we are doing this and on Sat Sept 3rd at Aikido of Diablo Valley in Concord. We have a regular class from 10 to 12, but we can turn that into the meet up. Then maybe a quick break from lunch, say back at 2 and for from 2 to 4? The link below has a map to the dojo.

http://www.advdojo.org/newmap.html

The address is :
Aikido of DiabloValley

Michael Hackett
05-19-2011, 01:47 PM
I'll be driving up on Friday and returning home on Sunday. An informal dinner sounds good for Saturday night since I'm gonna be there anyway.

BWells
05-19-2011, 04:06 PM
10 to 12 then 2 to 5 on Sat Sept 3 works for me with dinner after. Several restaurants around here. We ofter go to Tahoe Joe's after seminars.

ChrisHein
05-20-2011, 08:59 AM
Sounds good to me! How do we plan to structure the classes? Do we want to break it up into small chunks where people teach, or do we want to kind of keep it a free-for-all where we talk and work on what comes up?

Now that we have a date and time, we could easily have a sign up sheet and get an idea of how many are coming.

BWells
05-20-2011, 09:54 AM
Well since we are taking regular class time for the 10 to 12 morning session, let me see what my sensei Rick thinks for that session. I would vote for teaching in the morning then do groups to work on what we want in the afternoon. Something along the lines of teach some principals in the morning then let people do groups and explore them in detail in the afternoon sessions. My 2 cents anyway.

Thanks
Bruce

Janet Rosen
05-20-2011, 10:37 AM
I think since a lot of Aikiweb time is spent on discussing vs. IHTBF on aiki/IS and structure and martial issues that brief presentations, workshops flowing into each other - not meant to teach in depth rather just to give a flavor - would be one approach for afternoon - perhaps planning 20 min per so there ends up being plenty if time for unanticipated tangents and experimenting

How far is the Dojo from the train station? Is there a Martinez or such Amtrak drop off, and a bus into Concord? I haven't rode the train in awhile, it might be nice.

Janet Rosen
05-20-2011, 03:47 PM
Man, I love trains..wish that was an option from here! Glad we are starting at 10 as that let's me just get up early and drive (hopefully) mostly empty roads.....

For Sat night I'll be looking at the Hilton - would be very happy to share a 2 bed room w/ somebody or, if they have suites, share w/ a bunch of folks in the aikido-l seminar tradition, to reduce costs.

BWells
05-20-2011, 04:12 PM
There is a Amtrak station in Martinez. I called the Hilton, (925-827-2000) and while they do not do pick up that far out there, they suggest take the number 19 or # 28 buses to the Concord bart station and then call the Hilton for pickup.

Janet Rosen
05-20-2011, 05:24 PM
IIRC google has me driving through Martinez en route from Mendo so if the timing works it might be quicker than waiting for a bus on a holiday weekend - Chris feel free to p.m. me

Anybody beside me heading in from points north?

ChrisHein

Regarding train options-- the Amtrak station in Richmond is a combination Amtrak and Bart station. Bart is really cool and you can see the station's relative location on the ADV map that was posted. So you can just transfer to Bart in Richmond and you'll be in Concord in 45min. (You have to switch bart trains one time)
Bart:
bart.gov

I'll be barting in from SF. The station is 1.8 miles from the dojo.
Anyway that's one option.

Looking back over the thread I see, in addition to Bruce and the other ADV folks, the "yes!" camp includes:
me, Jonathan Wong, Chris Hein (+friends/students?), Michael Hackett (+friends?), William Hazen = at least 5 people
and the "maybe" group includes:
David Valadez, Lorien Low, Tarik Ghbeish = 3

Things open with 10 a.m. class at ADV on Saturday, Sept. 3, and we will plan on going out to dinner Saturday evening for folks not hitting the road right away.
If you are in California and free Labor Day weekend, come on and join us!!!!!

I think we had a pretty good time. Talked a lot about "internal" and found some common ground. It was great to meet all of you.

so what were the common ground? anything to share? it's not the dimsum stuffs that you don't know where within the domesticated animals they came from, right?

Oh, looking for insider information, eh? :D

It was indeed a pleasure to meet the folks behind the postings and get to play on the mat. MANY THANKS to Rick Rowell and ADV for permitting yet another one of our impromptu playtimes. Rick even took his Sat a.m. class and explicitly aimed it towards what we planned on playing with more informally in the afternoon.

We shall have to do another....

I would also like to give a big thanks to Rick Rowell for the use of the Dojo, his time, patience and great stories! Also, thanks to Bruce for setting the whole thing up, and to all who make it out!

Nothing big Phi. It's just that when you get people together and start talking, in person, sensibly you can start to see that what seemed like a large difference in understanding isn't so great.

Everyone there was pretty cool, and having another meet up is, in my opinion a great idea.

I'd like to offer my Dojo up for the next California Aikiweb meet up. How about May-ish?

Well I definitely enjoyed meeting everyone and the training. I would support doing it again. Note that Rick said he had a good time too and hoped that what he went over Sat morning, was in line with what everyone wanted.

May-ish at Chris's works for as of now.

I also agree that in talking and asking more detailed followup questions, we found that mostly we were all in sync. Worked on structure, ground paths, relaxation, connection. All the buzz words:rolleyes: :D

Was fun and got to go out with a few folks at the end and drink some beer. Always a good ending:cool:

Phi, since Ric, Bruce and I had all been at the Seattle Aiki seminar just a few wks earlier, we oriented our stuff to that. In the afternoon session I started by talking about explorations I have been doing (prompted not just by seminar but also arguing on Aikiweb w/ Graham about "hips") with the difference between anatomical hips (where femur meets bottom of pelvis) and what most people call hips (upper lateral pelvis) and the how differently and separately they can move and open and stabilize. From that I had us play w/ some of Toby's exercises for finding stability in structure and pulling one leg vs pushing the other, then I handed it over to Bruce...I'll let him describe what he did...then he handed it over to Chris...I'll let him describe what he did. Big fun. May in Central Valley theoretically works for me: I expect there to be trips to/from SFO for my mom, assuming her health holds, so coordinating with that would rock.

Well lets see, what did I do. Hum memory may be going:eek:

I continued some of the structure exercises from Toby that Janet started, mainly working on keeping structure as people put pressure on you from different angles or move around you. I also showed an exercise on turning from your waist rather than hips (oops sorry Janet, not hips, pelvis) that Howard Popkin showed me at the Seattle Aiki Seminar. Didn't do too much, showed the above and let people practice. Then turned it over to Chris.

Hey guys,
I'd like to offer up my Dojo for an aikiweb meet-up in the spring- April or May. We are located in Fresno, which is pretty central, and there are lot's of good places to eat/hang out around where the dojo is located (Fresno's Tower district). Our school is 3,300 sqft, with over half that being mat space. If anyone needs a place to crash they are welcome to stay the night in the Dojo. We could do a Saturday and Sunday, or just a one day event.

The last meet up was fun, let's do it again.

I will likely be tied up with family stuff end of April but if I have to get my mom to SFO in May that puts me partway to Fresno so keeping options open.
