Here is a blog that helps to understand what has and is happening to the nuclear reactors in Japan.

While not an expert on this matter I did have some training in the Air Force and based on that and what I have read this article makes sense.

I hope anyone that has more knowledge and experience than I would comment.

Second reactor has a steam release .... valve stuck and knocked out the generator on the third reactor. Coolant levels dangerously low and likely fuel rods exposed. Generator runs out of fuel and coolant levels drop again. Worried ... nah. What's the worst that can happen? Seems like we will find out pretty soon.

It is too early to tell exactly but it seems that very little damage was done to the reactors by the quake. All the troubles are due to backup generators failing. Totally foreseeable and preventable.
